I think I have heard of running more than one card but what would happen if they were not the same brand. Would it still work? For instance, a nividea and an ati.

    It will not work...

It should be the same brand and the same model (number)...

Actually, they can be different brands. They both must be nVidia or ATI and they have to have the same chipset. For example, you could have a BFG Geforce 8800GTS and an eVGA Geforce 8800GTS in SLI. But, you could not have an eVGA 8800GTS and an eVGA 8800GTX.

The responses posted so far are making assumptions. The original post provides little information. He said nothing SLI, what OS has he, or anything about what he's trying to accomplish.

More info is really needed to provide meaningful responses.

You are correct. I have a nvidea 6200 turbo cache and my friend was going to give me an ati 128mb card. I was just wondering if I could run the both of them.

A site devoted to multiple monitor configurations, http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/db.asp, has a database of various combinations of cards, and there are many cases of combinations of cards with GPUs from different manufacturers. So, it should work. Since the card is free, I'd sure give it a try.
