Graphics cause high CPU

For a few days now, my CPU is constantly near or at 100%. Here is my computer information:

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (6.1, build 7601)
    HP pavilion dv4 notebook PC
IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator HD core i5
    Directx 11

Every day, sometimes twice a day, I've run Spybot Search and Destroy to try and find malware, and each time the scan finishes and I "fix" the broken registry files (which all have to do with Directx graphics or sound files), the CPU is temporarily lowered. However, as soon as I try to watch a video online or even a saved video file on my computer, the CPU shoots back up and doesn't come back down.

I have also tried uninstalling Shockwave/Flash player and reinstalling an earlier version, as well as deleting Google Chrome, in case either of those might be the problem. Neither have given any solution, though.

I am at wit's end, and have no idea where to go from here. Please help!

can you acess task manager and see what exact process is hogging your cpu?

It's a bit strange, whenever it's at its highest, they're programs like Skype or Firefox. But right now, the percentage is very low.

Any program that requires the use of my graphics card, like when I try to load a movie or a video game makes it run unbelievably slow, and before this past week, that never happened.

How old is the video card?

Do you have the latest drivers installed?

It's an embedded card, almost 3 years old (same as laptop). I've tried to find updates for the drivers, but Intel has discontinued any for this particular product.

Which program are you using to "fix" the registry?

Does it tell you which registry entries it is fixing? Can you please post them here?

does the high cpu load continue if you go into safe mode? windows will load into the standard vga mode rather than use the drivers from your manufacturer

if your confident enough go into device manager and uninstall your display adapter..reboot and windows will re-install it and reload the drivers

    1) I've attached screen caps of what the "fix" list shows 90% of the time.

    2) I don't think I'm that confident, unfortunately, the last thing I should do is make a change thinking I know what I'm doing. :) And yes, the CPU is still very high while in safe mode.

I wouldn't recommend using registry editors as they can cause major problems with windows if they screw something up.

It would appear that the program is clearing cookies, which may be what is fixing the problem.

I recommend you download & install CCleaner which is a cleaning program. Use it to clear the temporary files and see if that makes a difference.

Also the Registry Cleaner in CCleaner works well. I use it all the time especially after updating Windows, software or drivers.

    Hi

If the high CPU is only generally in browsers then I would think that the cause is likely to be a 3rd party addon and the main ones are Adobe Flash and Sun Java so update the two of them and while at it update Shockwave and Silverlight as they are also web media players.
