Graphics controller

Merry Christmas everyone! Imagine my joy when I opened up the Sims 2 game! So, installed it, made sure the graphics driver was updates, got the latest version of Direct X... and... yet, the game wouldn't run on my Intel 82815. So, went to Intel's website, did everything they wanted me to do, restarted, still wouldn't run. So, it appears that it's time to get a new graphics card... but where do I start? I don't know much about video cards and stuff... Which ones are compatible with Direct X? Where could I find one under $100 that would work with my game? And how do I know whether or not a card would work with my motherboard and all of the rest of the stuff in my computer?
