graphics in java/animation?

    I have a good basic knowledge of java and programming in general, up to the point of beginning to use graphics and applets. I would like to do something more useful with graphics though, in particular constructing graphics which vary with time - I want to plot things as they move around in a 2D environment. Would this be termed animation? Can anyone recommend some literature on the subject or websites? thanks.
