Six months ago tomorrow, I got rear ended by a truck, not my fault. Been going to my Chiro ever since, found out today, most likely some "issues" will never resolve, so, some permanent injury/damage. Just fooking lovely. Now I get to deal with the insurance company to see how much they are going to pay me for pain.

At least I have a friend that is a lawyer that wont try to snag half the $. Would have gone to the range and shot some stuff, but the ammo shortage is back in full effect here...

Oh well... just ranting a bit. :cool

Get a second opinion. Chiropractors aren't real docs IMO.

Good point. But, have been going to one for years. I have pretty serious back issues, right now just take a few aspirin all along. Ortho wants to fuse vertibrae and such. Not sure I am down with that.

Chiro actually helps with pain, with no drugs, or surgery.

Major joint fusion, that might or might not work, drugs, or Chiro, that is pretty much working with streaching and such...

How do you put a fair price on pain every day for the next 20 to 40 years?

Will consider calling the insurance company and see if they will pay for a visit to the Ortho.

Very sorry to hear about your suffering, man! I know a little bit about what you're going through. I pinched a disk in my back 20+ years ago weight lifting. My back pain surges from time to time. I agree with Adrynalyne, a second opinion is a good idea. I've gone to a physiotherapist for years.

Yep....back issues are horrible. About 7 or 8 years ago, I really injured my back. I started developing nerve damage as a result which led to drop foot.

Fast forward to now, I'm doing great. No pain, other than the usual aches associated with getting older.

I play golf very regularly. Its one of the things I enjoy that I do with my husband and all my friends. So it wasn't something I could really even consider not doing.

So, here are my thoughts for what they are worth. Everyone is different, as are their back problems.

What I started with was the orthopedic practice around here...the back guy specifically. They ALWAYS want to treat it with surgery. I do have to say, though, that luckily this guy told me to wait after the initial injury and see if it got better. The next thing they would try are the steroid shots into the spine. He also gave me a script for physical therapy. Btw, I was in such pain that if he told me I should have surgery tomorrow, I probably would have said great!

I took anti inflammatories, and headed to a massage therapist (who used to do PT) I had heard awesome things about. She has worked for the Phil. Flyers and is now with the Eagles. She's incredible but couldn't do anything for me. She recommended more traditional PT to me. She gave me the name of a PT chiropractor. I went to him and he looked at my film and said don't ever let anyone adjust you....this from a chiro. I was thoroughly impressed. He started me on a PT program there, along with stim afterwards. I think I probably went to him for 6 months. More frequently in the beginning.

8 years later, as I said, I'm great. I'm glad I never went back to the ortho.

I will also say that I have a hot tub. I go in that as much as I can, and always before playing golf. I credit that as much as anything.

On the other end of the spectrum is my brother. Same major issues. He ended up having surgery. He was back to doing his triathlons about 3 months later. He no longer has issues either.

You may have to go the surgery route, but do something other than a chiro. My personal opinion is that 90% of them are snake oil salesman who give you a quick fix, but don't repair, or help you repair the problem. My guy did and it wasn't because of adjustments.

It honestly makes me sad to hear someone say they have back issues because I know how awful it is. I hope you find some relief from it. But as Adryn said, go to a doctor...maybe not the same one you went to before. Who ever it is, get real recommendations from people in your area. Drive to a major city if you have to. Your insurance will pay for it.

It's all the conservative websites you frequent , they've weakened your spine.:-D :p

Sue them for everything they've got! Recuperating is always easier while lying on a bed of cash.

Sorry to hear of your back problems, Fred. I would seek another opinion like adry said though.

When I was a teenager I sustained a permanent back injury doing judo and the orthopaedic surgeon wanted to fuse three vertebrae in my lower back. I was only 16 years old and my parents took me to a chiropractor and although he relieved my pain he wasn't really helping improve my mobility and three visits a week was very expensive. A family friend suggested I see an osteopath named Bill who did sports medicine for one of the then major VFL footy teams. We duly went down and saw Bill and he was fantastic. He took one look as I walked in the door and said by the looks of how you are walking I reckon you have a couple of damaged vertebrae in your lower back so then we showed him the xrays and doctor's report. He then took all sorts of measurements and then he worked out some very specific exercises for me to do twice a day straight after a really hot bath. He also did some massage and some exercises while I was there and said I would have to come back every fortnight to measure the progress and have another massage with exercises and he would also fine tune the home exercises as I regained more mobility. When my father asked how much all this treatment was going to cost and Bill said it is for free as he actually works for the footy club and doesn't usually take outside patients but someone had put in a good word and he agreed to see me. The reason he gave my father for helping me is that he derives great satisfaction by helping young kids overcome their injuries so they can work to their potential and he feels proud helping them become a success with their life and so one day a week he gives his services free for 8 hours to help these special patients. What a wonderful and inspiring man and within two months of his treatment there was a measured 60% improvement. He said from experience the next 30% would take another 6 to 8 months and he said that will be good enough as I will always have a weakness as the bones were actually chipped but after a 90% recovery I have lived my life with very few problems and was very active in downhill skiing, ice hockey, pennant squash and water skiing. I only gave up squash and skiing when I ripped my cruciate ligament in my knee at 45 years old. With my back I have very little problem so long as I am careful and use my legs when I lift heavy things and if I am going to exercise make sure I do some gentle warmup stretches before I start.

    FWIW
My advice to you is to seek out someone specialising in sports medicine that works for a major sporting body. The reason I say a major sporting body is that they would recruit only the very best physios as their players are probably worth a fortune and would expect to get the best possible treatment. Personally I would only have a spinal fusion after all other options had been explored. I know three people that had fusions and also several people that had some vertebra wired and all said that it generally fixed the pain but reduced their mobility and in particular their rotational flexibility.
The sports medicine route will only work if you are prepared to do all the exercises they prescribe and you have to be pretty dedicated because the exercises can get very uncomfortable before it starts improving. In my case once I overcame the first couple of pain hurdles then it was a steady improvement eventually becoming easier as I progressed.

Hope this info helps and best wishes for a good resolution to your back problems.

    cheers

Thanks for the posts! I am planning on trying to find a ortho to check it out, just don't know if the insurance will pay for it.

As far as the Chiro, they looked at my X-rays and don't adjust me either. They do some stuff with muscles, stretching and such. And some nice massages. And sometimes they torture me with some deep tissue stuff.

Chiro has shown me how to prevent pain in my shoulder, a pinched nerve, but it is only a stretch, but it works. I have a birth defect that causes spinal problems, and then we add in the neck problems. Interesting puzzle.. I went to High School with my Chiro, is a friend, so don't think he is just trying to take my $. Who knows.

I just realized I "thanked" you for your original post. I was on my phone when I posted and must have it the button by accident.

I don't want you to think I was trying to be a jerky like when people "like" sad/tragic facebook posts. Which is something I don't understand..

When I was having my back issues, my uncle, who is a surgeon, told me there is actually disc replacements going on. I didn't really explore this, so I have zero idea on the real world existence of it, but with all the back issues out there, and how long people are living now, I'd say it's not 100 years out.

Ouch Fred, hope your ok and well you are alive so that's a plus after a car accident!

I agree with Jeremy on docs and a musculoskeletal consultant is best for this.
