    I have read about grounding on the web and the discussion in this forum and there are a zillion ideas as to how not to harm the machine.
    It boiled down to;
    leave the pc plugged in if the house is wired properly, turn the machine off, do not work on carpet, and touch the housing or metal case of the pc while working on it.
    Does this sound about right?

    A grounding wrist strap is a good idea.

    When I pull the computers apart, I always unplug them. I have several anti-static wrist straps and if I replace or add a part, I rest it on anti-static bag. My computer chairs rest on those large anti-static mats so when I work, I move the chair and work while standing on the anti-static mat.

    Being in the business, I can understand your thoroughness.
    I do not know if I can assemble all that equiptment but will look into it further.
    Thank you

    Humidifiers help a lot in high-static areas.

    peterr, I am not in the computer business! I'm not sure where you got that impression. I'm a retired math(s) teacher who is self-taught by reading books, magazines and articles and posts on the internet. I simply offer free help to my senior citizen friends so they do not have to go to a big box store and pay outrageous prices as well as get poor advice at times from the people who work in the big box stores.

    The first time I wanted to install RAM, sometime back in 1989 or 1990 I was too scared to open the computer so I asked a co-worker (a business teacher who was also self taught) to come and do it. When he showed me how easy it was, I decided I should not be scared to open the computer and look to see what the parts were.

    Hi Peter,

    The suggestion to leave the computer plugged in is great but just turning it off the usual way will not help at all. You must turn it off at the switch on back of the power supply. That way the AC is disconnected on both legs but the 'Safety' ground is still conected. Not really much danger of you getting electrocuted but is a help with static electricity. No switch means that you don't have this choice. I'm too lazy to use a grounding strap but that is also a very good idea.

    Hope this helps someone,

    Jim
