I just bought an HP Pavillion notebook running Vista and wanted to copy my files from my Dell Inspiron which is running XP-Pro w/SP3 which I've been using since 2001 or 2. For some reason the Vista file transfer protocol wouldn't run so I thought "okay fine, I'll just transfer the files over my Linksys router connection wirelessly".

After hours of screwing around with this fantastic new OS [Vista], I realized it wasn't my ignorance that was to blame for my inability to get the two machines to recognize oneanother. In the Vista Network and Sharing Center, the XP machine would not appear on the network map. Following some research I attempted to install LLTD from the MS website but after downloading I received a message that my existing SP3 was newer and LLTD would not be installed. However, I didn't have, and still don't, show LLTD in my LAN connections window.

So, okay fine again. I'll skip the map and just click on 'View Computers and Devices' but the Dell doesn't appear there either. Now I don't know what I did, if anything, but at some point an hour or so later, the Dell mysteriously appeared in the Network window in Vista. [IT JUST DID AGAIN WHILE I WAS TYPING THIS!] This happened twice yesterday; and on one occasion, the Dell appeared as an icon at the bottom of the map window indicating that it could not be mapped. [Right now it does not appear there although it is still listed among networked devices].

Last night I managed to copy the majority of my files across the LAN and went to bed while my rather ladrhgje 'My Pictures' folder was being copied. This morning, I awoke to find the transfer terminated and my Dell locked-up. I had to disconnect the power and battery to restart, then it was back to square one. I am going to retry the copy but I sure would like to know what's going on and prevent yet another repeat performance.

    TIA

Think I'll just ditch Vista and install XP-Pro. What ever happened to "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?
