Hacked or Trojaned

I have a laptop which is wireless. My home DSL is not secured. I had a Yahoo email account.
I suspected someone had hacked into or trojaned my laptop. I had a lot of problems with my laptop such as it ran slower and slower, my photos and other documents were deleted, my I had trouble getting on the net, had deleted icons, laptop would reboot on its own, etc.
I'm now being accused of sending unwanted emails. They say the emails must have been sent by me because the "internet headers" box shows my email address and IP addresses that belong to clients where I would in fact use my laptop

I keep trying to tell my accuser that I did not send the emails and that I thought someone had accessed my computer. They keep saying that it's impossible for this to happen to my computer. He says he has an expert who will say that I must have sent the emails!

Bottom line is, if my laptop was hacked into or trojaned, can it be controled by someone else any time and anywhere I'm on the net and the emails are coming directly from my laptop?
Can anyone help me on this and explain it in plain English? I'm not that tech savvy.

I have installed a firewall and had my laptop wiped clean.

I just want to know in plain English , if my laptop was hacked into or trojaned, can it be controled by someone else any time and anywhere I'm on the net and the emails will be sent directly from my laptop and show my IP address, etc?
Can anyone help me on this and explain it in plain English? I'm not that tech savvy

    Hi

Yes, it is possible for someone to hack into a computer and get passwords to accounts.

The only to be sure, if you want help here at MajorGeeks, is to follow the instructions given to you by TimW in your thread in the Welcome Forum:

A firewall does not prevent malware, btw.

But if they hack in and get my passwords and send email out, will the email come directly from my laptop or from the computer and IP address of the person who hacked into mine?

I already had the laptop cleaned and reloaded the operating system, etc.

If they get your passwords and hack into your email account, the email will be sent from your email client (ie. Yahoo) with the IP address of the sender in the heading.

IP addresses are issued by your internet service provider. Generally, they have a pool of IP addresses that they issue to their customers because of the shortage of numbers. For the most part, it is very very hard to ID someone (other than their general geographical location) using an IP address because most people's are dynamic (they change and are temporarily assigned a number from that pool of numbers their ISP uses).

    Thanks, LauraR.

When I looked at the IP/internet info box, the emails show that they came through my laptop, my Yahoo account and from the locations where I was using my laptop.
that's why I'm asking. Maybe I misunderstand what you're telling me. I take you to mean that if someone hacks into my Yahoo account and sends emails, the IP address would show that the emails came from their laptop and IP? Is that right?

Sorry for so many questions, but I'm not tech savvy in the least, and my husband doesn't know the answers either.

IPs can basically tell you a limited amount. Sometimes, depending on what email service you use, it can tell you what the originating computer was. Mostly all it will tell you is the town you live in and your Internet Service provider.

Are you saying that in your header, you see the name of your computer listed? I use Yahoo (with a verizon email address). If I send an email to myself either through Yahoo or Outlook, it only gives an IP address. Yahoo doesn't provide my computer name or locations.

If someone hacked into your account and had your password to your Yahoo email and then sent an email from their computer, it would give their IP address.

Do you have a static IP address (one that remains the same)? Who is your ISP? I highly doubt your provider gives their customers a static IP. In other words, your IP address would change frequently.

I really can't give you much more info. I'm sure you could call your provider and they may be able to tell you more.

Here is a link you also might find useful. It has a lot of info on IPs. It will also tell you what your IP address is at the moment.

Btw, I'm not saying there's no chance, but the likelihood of your computer being controlled by someone really isn't that high. It is much more plausible that you were infected with a keylogger and someone got your passwords. Again, I'm not saying it can't happen at all, just that the other scenario is more likely.

    Thanks, LauraR

Here's the info from 1 of the emails my accuser provided. It does show my email address, etc. And it shows at the end of the info that there was an email originally from my accuser's address, but when I read the email, it only showed 1 email sent from me to him. I other words, there was not an email string, although in the internet header/IP info it looks like there was.
some of the other emails they provided show not only the IP address that I was accessing but list the firm's name who had that IP address.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I really can't give you any other info.

I can look up the IP addresses that are in your header, but you could (and probably have already done) do that too.

Someone else may be able to give you the answers you're looking for.

Again, do you know if your IP address is static? I may be wrong, but unless, the person (even an expert) brought criminal charges against you and your internet provider gave them the info, there really isn't a way to say that the emails came from your exact computer. I am by no means an expert, but I'm not seeing anything in the header other than the fact that the email was sent from your email address and possibly the town (assuming you live in CA) you live in.

Again, maybe someone else will come along that can better read the header...

In the meantime, try the link I gave you to see if you can get some answers. They also have a forum there where you might find info. (http://forum.whatismyip.com/f4/ )
