Hey guys ... I have a serious problem ... After using spyware doctor to remove the Braviax virus and many others, I rebooted the computer and it tells me "the file Hal.dll is missing or corrupted and needs tto be replaced". Windows will not even boot. Help please ...

What if I don't have a windows xp cd and can't even start my computer?

@Binary....please do not hijack someone else's thread. Start your own for your issues.

@Kthxpwned ..you will need to borrow one. Make sure it is the exact version of what you have installed.
Then you will have to boot to the bios and change the boot order to make the cd the first boot preference so you can boot to the cd.

@TimW ... So once I get the cd and change the boot order to cd drive first, do you think that I could repair/replace the file through the recovery console? I guess the only thing I'm concerned about is if a virus is faking this and the file is truly ok? Or is that not possible?

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. You need to replace the file using the recovery console. As I stated before, it is likely that Spyware doctor removed it ....as to whether it actually was infected is hard to know. So you just need to follow those instructions to replace it from the cd back to the sys32 folder.

Back again. :-D *(I'm slowly gettin' used 2 this site now).
I've NEVER used Spyware doctor (I don't think).
Anyway, U say all I have 2 do is copy SVCHOST.EXE 2 my SYS32 folder?
I've got SP2 disc, it has the required file called :- SVCHOST.EX (same thing yes?) :confused Then all will B well. :)

My advice was not to you Binary. So if you were to follow it, since it does not concern your system but rather Kthxpwned's, you will probably screw your system more than it is now. SO DO NOT POST IN SOMEONE ELSES THREAD!!

I have already removed the posts that you made in this thread previously.

    TimW,
I have followed these instructions to no avail. I borrowed a windows xp cd with the exact same version as my system and followed the steps in the instructions, yet every time I tried copying over or expanding a new Hal.dll file, error messages come up saying "a problem occurred wwhile the directory was being enumerated and such. And now whenevr I boot up, instead of displaying the hal error, I get one saying ntldr is missing ... So many problems. I am on the verge of giving up and taking it to the geeksquad.

Well, it's a squad but they aren't geeks! Please save your money. You can fix this.

You can create a boot floppy, boot USB or a boot CD.
    1. Download one of the three files from the site
    2. Follow the directions on what to do foe either floppy, CD-R or USB.
    3. Put the device into the corrupted computer and turn it on.

    Plodr,
Tried all steps in both regular and safe mode to no avail. All of them gave me one of the four errors on that page. I am planning to create a new XP boot cd and try a repair install. This should fix the problem without deleting all the files/programs/data I have created. Hopefully. If I should not do this, advise me otherwise.

I need a step by step deal here guys ... Recovery console's chkdsk tells me that every one of my directories has one or more unrecoverable errors ... Bootcfg won't run and all the directories inside c:/ have strange symbols for names, keeping me from looking inside them or changing them ... Agh!!

boot form the windows cd adn DO NOT go into recovery console, wait till it gives you the option the repair a windows installation:

    Here's a good guide to follow http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If that fails you, maybe you could put your HD into another pc as slave and copy your files from it then format and start fresh...

Tried this ... Pushed enter. I have two partitions, both do not have enough space to install it says. And btw there is no repair option in mine for some reason ... Anything else?

So here's something that helped a little. I used miles comer's fix to get past the ntldr problem, but after that the Hal.dll error comes up again. Fml.
