Just curious what forum/s you would recommend for Vista discussions and issue resolutions...as I have an issue myself, and googling just turns up the same old junk over and over!!

Oh, and BTW...My HP 1610xi AIO printer works great with my HP laptop over my wireless network!!

I've had a bit of a play with RC1. I have a bit of an issue how it won't tell applications if their attempted write to an unprivilged director is being denied. In fact it doesn't seem to even tell the user.

Other than that it seems alright. It doesn't seem like that much of a step up from XP in performance terms, though.

I wouldn't know where to discuss issues with it though.

OK...here's an update on my issue!!

I went into safe mode and found the option to disable the startup welcome screen in Msconfig, so I tried that and now if freezes about 2-5 seconds into loading the desktop.

I also found in Msconfig that there was a startup program for my Nvidia video card, but to my confusion it said it was Nvidia something or another for Windows 2000!!  I am using the Nvidia software from their website that it is for Vista!! Again...  !!

Being that things are working just fine in safe mode (since after all I am doing this post here), it leads me to believe that it is something trying to load when Vista starts, however...I have disabled the couple of things that are in the startup list and it still does it, in fact I've disable everything in there and still no luck!!!! It is a clean install and I haven't installed ANYTHING else on it, so I know it isn't the case of an incompatible application!!

So anyway...I'm going to go in and set it to boot with the basic windows video driver and see what it does!!

    Hi Roger,

That seems as good a place as any for now to find info or assistance on Vista as its not widely used as yet, so having technet and from the few MSFT employees I noticed on their just now your likely to get a fair answer maybe, as most of them are more often than not on the MS Beta Newsgroup forum, closed unless your part of the techbeta, MSDN etc

Sadly the 3rd party companies are still dragging their heals in relation to driver and software updates for Vista, nVidia do seem to be having alot of problems with their drivers at present, I have ATi card so cannot compare results, but did you have any issues with graphics with the default MS drivers? as they seem to be ok for most and have suprisingly better performance than the beta nVidia's as just reading some feedback now on the newsgroup, a few are seeing lowered performance so are rolling back to the MS default drivers, I found the MS Ati default drivers work well until more stable drivers are released.

I guess most of the issues are coming with the driver helpers and add-ons that both Ati and nVidia drivers install that add at least a few startups.

That is kind of what I was thinking too, as a whole!!

Oh well...that is the whole purpose of RC1, to hopefully iron out as many bugs as possible!!

But anyway...just got my official copy of RC1 in the mail today, so I will do another clean install on it tonite...always looking for a challenge, you know!! However, I think I am going to image my XP onto an PATA drive, and then attempt to install Vista on my SATA drive, so I can get maximum performance with the resources I have!!

We'll see...I'll be back with some later developements as they come, for whoever is interested!! In the meantime...it's time to fire up the old school bus and take the kiddies home, so back to work!!

Hey I'm always interested Roger ;)

BTW what build are you about to go on now RC1 5600 or RC1 5728?

RC1 5728 is the better of the two builds.

Something I found with installing some drivers or software on various builds, was to right click the setup.exe file and choose Properties > Compatability and tick Run this Program as an Administrator > Apply you got them to install correctly or to actually install over crashing ( basically your elevating the privilege level )

A bit of reading for UAC settings ( I personally wouldnt disable it as its that level of security that may well help prevent malware installing... but I know some will disable it as it does popup a UAC access prompt on many Administrative tasks ) http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/library/0d75f774-8514-4c9e-ac08-4c21f5c6c2d9.mspx

One thing that might help if Halo is correct......... and he probably is. ;)

I have not tried it only read about this function and it might not pickup the add-ons and helpers loaded with drivers.

Insert the OS Disk and when you get to the install page. Go to the Repair Console and run "Fix Startup Problems". Vista will automatically remove any and all programs that are causing problems with the OS. It will fully remove them from your system. The only thing it will leave is the programs install exe., or zip file used to install the program. This will help determine what programs aren't yet ready for Vista.

Well...I'm about half way through a new install. As I was sitting here, I was looking at the back of my case, and it dawned on me that I hadn't unplugged the printers usb cable like I thought I did, so once I get throught this install, we'll see!!

Well...another update...I am currently posting this in windows vista!!

FINALLY...but we'll see how long this will last!! I ended up just installing the basic VGA driver for the video adapter. The Latest version from Nvidia for the GeForce 5500 doesn't work (even though it is suposedly for Vista) and the Microsoft version of the Nvidia driver doesn't work either!! So I rolled it over to the basic one and restarted and and was playing around for couple minutes and then I got a BSOD (something about "Quota Under something or another...didn't catch it all fro the system restarting) So once I got going here again I went in and set it to not automatically restart on a crash so I can read it if it happens again!! But anyway...it's been about 5 minutes now and this is the longest it has ever gone in regular mode!!!!

I'm sure I'll be a cussing again before long, but maybe I'll get lucky!!

Oh, and BTW...atleast on my machine, even though it is only an Athlon XP3000 w/756mb of DDR400 memory...this thing is SCREAMING!!!! It takes a day and a half to get the ball rolling when you start it up, but after that, it is just click, click, click!!

Build 5728 was released to TechBeta, MSDN and selected few 1000+ public testers of Build 5600, it wasnt widely available like 5600 CTP.

RC2 is due but apart from TechBeta, MSDN and TAP, I dont know as yet how widely it will be available for public download.

    New Vista build released....

Looks like this one isnt being tagged at RC2 but just a Build in the form of 5744 in both x86 and x64 versions.

MS Connect users only at present, it will roll out to MSDN and maybe the select few 1000 from CPP as the last build in 5728 did the other week.
