Hello. I'm having an issue that just started with my laptop and would really appreciate your help / input! I assume it's a hardware issue, but I'm not sure. Forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I have a HP ProBook 4535s laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 1.

Three days ago, I updated Ad-Aware. On the reboot, my laptop started hanging for about 30 seconds on a purple screen, then finally the login screen appears. I ran Ad-Aware. It removed two items. Rebooted. Same problem. I uninstalled Ad-Aware. Rebooted. Same problem. Scanned with Malwarebytes (found nothing). Rebooted. Same problem. Used Drive Booster 2 to update 14 drivers. Rebooted. Same problem. Now, I'm concerned it might be a hardware issue.

Any help diagnosing this greatly appreciated. My life is on this laptop!! I'm an average user, good at finding stuff thanks to Window's GUI, but that's were my knowledge ends. You'll probably have to talk to me like I'm in Kindergarten, if you need specific info. or actions from me to help in this process. Sorry and thank you in advance!!!

I'm guessing like most people you assume nothing is ever going to happen to a computer you own. Do you have images? Did you make restore/recovery disks or did a set come with the computer? Do you know the serial number of the Windows version installed and have it written down for safe keeping? Do you have copies of all your important files stored off the computer?
If not, those things need to be done first.

Thanks plodr. I'm well aware that my beloved laptop is ancient in tech terms and likely to die on any given day. Yes, I have all important files backed up. The laptop didn't come with restore/recovery disks and yes I have made them since. I had not copied down my Windows serial number, so thank you for bringing that to my attention. I will do that now!!

I appreciate your advice. Thank you.

I'm hoping someone can help me with what might be going wrong with the laptop. Parts can be replaced. Software can be fixed. But I need to know what I'm dealing with. :)

I'm glad you have your "ducks in a row" recovery and files wise.
Well I'll do some looking. A purple screen is a new one for me.
If you have a spare monitor attach that and see if you get a purple screen. If not, we can say it is the laptop screen causing the problem of purple.

System restore eliminated the problem! Thank you!

If you don't mind hanging in here with me, I'd appreciate advice on how to protect my laptop since ad-aware is assumed to be the culprit. The restore put it back on my machine and it's begging to be updated. What do I do? Delete it again? If so, what do you recommend I replace it with? I already have Malwarebytes free edition. Is it enough?

Thank you again. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I don't have adaware installed on any of our computers. (I dumped Lavasoft quite a few years ago). In Win 7, I let MS Security Essentials work as my AV, I aslo have paid licenses for Malwarebytes.
In addition, I use SpywareBlaster (passive control to prevent you going to bad sites and won't let any of those cookies on the computer) and I have AdBlockPlus working actively in my browsers.

You may want to look at something to replace Adaware since it messed up your hardware.

Let me see if I can find a legitimate removal tool for Ad-aware. There are too many snake oil sites and I don't want you to get malware trying to remove something.
    This is for v 10

v 11 seems like it has quite a few problems and I haven't found an uninstall. There is a long thread about problems

If you have Adaware 11 Total Security, AppRemover will be able to uninstall it

    You can download AppRemover here

note: MajorGeeks found it is bundleware. Read the MG blurb in red and do a custom install so you do not get crapware on your computer!

I've used AppRemover in the past to be sure security programs were cleaned off.

If you used this as an av program, try MS Security Essentials instead.
To add to this download Malwarebytes (don't opt for the trial) simply use the free version and scan about once a week. If nothing is found, you can scan every 2 or 3 weeks. Quick scan not the long one.
