Happy Easter everyone!

Sweden is still a pagan country in many ways. The church thought it "domesticated" the fierce Vikings, but we kept our old traditions for most festivities.

As in many countries a few hundred years ago, witchcraft was something that terrified people. On Maundy Thursday, it is said that all witches in Sweden take their broom, their black cat, and a pot of coffee, and set off to an island called Blåkulla, where they spend Good Friday dancing with the devil around a huge bonfire.

Today we still honour the memory of them. Maundy Thursday, the kids dress up as witches and walk around the neighbourhood and ask for snacks "for the road", handing out Easter cards in return for a treat. This is a tradition older than the Halloween "trick or treat" tradition.

Sadly, I could not make it to Blåkulla this year. I spent Good Friday in England, and my broom has just been in for repairs, and I didn't want to put it through that journey, in case it wasn't up for the task. But next year, I'll pack up my cat and the old coffee pot and take off!

 

What a neat tradition, Solange . . . is there actually a place called Blåkulla?

 

Yes, there is an island called that in the Baltic. Name means "Blue Hill".
