happy new year everybody. we stayed in last night. it had been raining all afternoon, and we were feeling a little down. although the rain cleared by nightfall, we decided not to drive anywhere rather than risk the road blocks that were everywhere. we bought some champers, and were expecting a rather subdued start to the year. our new house is on a small estate, and we live in a little cul-de-sac of about a dozen houses occupied mostly by locals. we had heard that our area tended to celebrate new year with a bang, and certainly the fireworks had been going off all day, but when it reached the magic hour, i have never seen anything like it. hundreds, if not thousands, of fireworks, all being set off as fast as it was possible to do so. i have never seen so many fireworks outside of an organized display. although not choreographed in the same way, the shear volume produced the best show i have ever seen. for at least an hour the entire sky was alive with the psychedelic showers of dozens upon dozens of rockets simultaneously exploding above us. and not just my street. the whole neighborhood appeared to be in competition with itself, as to who could set off the most, the quickest. i have never seen anything like it, and feel blessed that we were in the thick of such an awesome display. its one of those things that the memory of which will stay for ever. i found it inspiring on some level that is difficult to explain, but i am now looking forward to this year with hope and renewed faith.....as opposed to 'oh, well, its another year.' i pray that you all take the time to see what is in your own backyard, so to speak, and that we all learn to cherish the passing of time simply as a preparation for the future. as i take stock of the year, i find i have learned, have grown and am adapting to this fast changing world in a more positive, more encouraged, manor, and with an ever deeper faith, and ever more thanks for the blessings that abound. happy new year. the rest of your life starts today. much aloha
