Hi, my hard disk on my desktop is acting very weird, ever since i pluged it into someone elses system to help fix it, it has been very unstable, I was wondering if anyone knew of a diagnostic and fix software tool I can use to see what the problem is.

Or you might be able to tell me? Basically, it is unreliable, sometimes I power up and the BIOS doesnt even see it, other times it sees it but gives it a jibberish name - i then get a unmountable boot volume error, then otehr times its totally fine, until about half way though a windows session! I have run chkdsk /r on it several times which fixes it breifly but not permanently. I have updated my BIOS and reinstalled the IDE controllers. I can only assume the hdd is dieing but i dont know why or what could of triggered it. Is there a tolls out there that might be able to answer these questions?

oh, its a maxtor 120GB hdd running on a jetway v266b motherboard.

    cheers for any help
