Fastest way to transfer data is disk-to-disk, ie. have both computers installed in the same computer...

Unless you're referring to EVERYTHING, like Windows, drivers, patches, applications, so that you can boot from the new hard drive, and everything is the same as your old hard drive's installation. In that case, you need an imaging program like Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image.

To completely copy one HD to another, like if you have 40gb HD and you just bought a new 250gb drive, and you want to move everything to the bigger, new drive so that it boots up just like it did with all your programs and documents and whatnot, you need something like Acronis, or Norton's Ghost as Mada said above. I use Ghost regularly, and you create a bootable floppy or CD and you boot to it. It boots into an imaging interface where you select the source drive, the destination drive, which partitions (or all partitions), etc. Then you say "GO!" and it goes. It takes anywhere from 5 or 6 minutes, to 2 hours or more depending on the drive(s) being used, how much data is on the drive, the PC specs, the drive specs, etc....

Ghost isn't a basic application but go here http://ghost.radified.com/
and there are good guides for various flavors of Ghost.
There is also a users forum for the various Ghost versions
    http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?catselect=general
I read through lots of threads there to get my questions answered.

Personally, having used both, Acronis True Image is easier to use than Ghost. I've also had verifications of images fail under Ghost but I haven't had that happen with True Image.

I agree with plodr - I do monthly full backups. Ghost has failed for me twice over 4 years. Acronis hasn't failed yet, over 2 years.:)
