Could be a fan bearing. A good backup would be a good idea just incase.

Just take the cover off and check. It shouldn't be too hard to isolate.

If you hard drive activity light is flashing, consistant with the chirping, your hdd is on the way out. Back up as previously mentioned.

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

Open the case and stop the fans one at a time o see if it is a fan, if it is the hdd, it is about to die and you need to backup ASAP

make sure the chirp isn't coming from the pc speaker (inside the case)

Before my HDD went south my wife and I noticed a ringing sound. It was just like an old bell style phone, very faint almost, like it was in the distance. It was definatley coming from the PC... 5 days later the HDD crapped out.

always a first time for everything but ive never heard a fan chirp. usually the fan make a distinct noise when its going out. never heard a harddrive chirp either.usually "clack...clack..clack" it might be your cd rom. it shouldnt be too hard to isolate since there arent that many things moving in your computer.

If its your HDD you need to back up ASAP. I've had my samsung 120 gig fail on me after under 2 years of use.......it went out with a rythmic clicking.

If you confident with handling PC hardware open her up while she's running , listen carefully and see if you can isolate the source of the chirping....make sure you're grounded........but I shouldn't need to tell you that if you are confident.........if you've built a rig before you aught to be.........

Make sure S.M.A.R.T is enabled in the Bios, and download a manufacturer's utility to test your drive.

We have most here in the downloads section.

I'd also be backing up anyway.

After reading this post, I do believe I heard a similar chirping from one of my computers a month ago. I didn't pay much mind to it, thinking it was a fan. I then moved one of my drives to another computer for an unrelated issue. I had not heard it from the computer it went to, but I don't remember if I heard it from the original one anymore either. Well, that hard drive is now unrecognized by BIOS, and my ordeal is below in case anyone can help. I would suggest you definitely back everything up and try your manufacturer's troubleshooting software and hopefully they'll replace it. What brand is your hard drive anyway?

My secondary hard drive is currently not being recognized and making four beeps (more defined than BIOS beep) about every 5 seconds until Windows XP boots up. It's a Maxtor 160Gb. I've tried it on a different computer, same issue. It worked fine two days ago, although about a year ago it was losing data, so I got everything I could out of it and used Maxtor's utility and it's been working fine ever since.

The noise sounds like musical tones. When I first heard it, I started looking for my wife's cell phone!

I now have a bunch of data on this drive that I don't have backed up... Genius that I am... so although it's still under warranty, I'd like to see if I can get it back up and running to at least get out the personal info. (I was organizing everything from all my hard drives and backups of the past 8 years so I coud make new backups to DVDs).

Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be able to do to get this guy back up and running?

Fixed my issue. Looked up "Maxtor musical" in Google, found a great thread with covered my issue exactly.
