I just mounted a fan on the inside of the front panel of my case (internal mounting was available) for $6AU, many cases have this option and it is located just below my HDD. It improves through flow for my sys from the front to the rear extraction fan. It cools the HDD slightly and improves overall circulation.

Do you need to cool your HDD? What's ya Temp's?

I have few PC's, all of which the HDD's are cooled by my Front intake fans, HDD's are mounted directly infront of a case fan
I have one case that had no front intake so I cut two holes in the bottom of my case one blows freash cool air directly onto my HDD the other is right below my video card blow lot's of fresh cool air onto my video card.

Another option is to buy HDD cooler/fan:

    Newegg has several others.
I preferee using case fans to provide cool air to my HDD as well as the rest of the whole system, it's just more efficent, quieter, better, cheaper.

Hard drives run warm, it's so that the electrons can keep moving easily so I wouldn't be too concerned if it was in the mid 40s :)

Thats almost 100 F, not really that bad
The PC I'm using here, my Maxtor 7200rpm SATA HDD is mounted directly behind my front case intake fan, it's running at 21 C / 70 F (Ive never seen more than a couple degrees higher)

Here's some general HDD temp info:

Hey we don't need a running commentary of your hard drive temperatures!

Why not get a temperature sensor and hook it up to a data logging program of some sort. Then you can test the thing with loads to see what it's peak temperatures might be. You could even plot a graph and post that. Just don't inflate your post count by posting one temperature at a time, please.

And where exactly are these temperatures coming from? The metal case? Inside the case? It makes a lot of difference you know...

Having a think: There is no particular reason to keep a HDD cold, unless you're cooling the controller (the circuit board bit) which might improve data reliability. Magnetic fields aren't really affected by heat, not in the scale of between -50C and +100C or so anyway. So as far as I can tell the only real advantage of cooling a HDD is to keep the controller cool to prevent transmission errors.

And the best way to prevent transmission errors is to make sure you don't have crosstalk on your IDE cables, which does mean not rolling them up. Hmmm
