When I start my brother's PC it says Disk Read Error and won't let me start windows.

It has two hard Drives. One has all my data and the other I think was used with RAID?

Anyway, can I fix this or is the hard drive dead. Also how do I know which hard drive isn't working? I have a feeling all my work on his PC is gone.

It either has three drives with two in raid as you need two drives for a raid array or the two drives that are in the PC are the raid array if the latter is true you most likely have lost all your data, hopefully your brother hasnt set up an array and the two drives are seperate if he says he doesnt know,he hasnt

First go into bios and see if the drives are recognized and working press delete as the computer is booting thing I would try is to insert a wondows xp disk if you have one and find one let it run until you reach the partition and format screen and check what the drives are recognized as and where the operating system is,if you cannot find a windows xp installation there the boot partition has probably become corrupt, this may be able to be repaired

Also check there isnt a floppy disk inserted :)

EDIT you can always remove trhe drive from the computer and install in the computer you typoed this message on,if ofcourse the drive isnt dead
