I am trying very hard to decide what to do. I have a good deal on another computer if I want to go for it. I have cleaned out my emachine tower and now the fan sounds fine. However, in many cases whenever the HD is seeking some data, or whatever it is it's doing, there is a loud sound. REALLY loud, but not every single time. Kind of sounds like a jet engine starting up -- getting louder and louder til it reaches a peak of high pitch noise. No actual grinding sounds.

What do you all think? HD for sure??

Try to locate EXACTELY de origin of the noise, I have seen that coming from the fan from the Power Supply, from the Video Card Fan, from the ChipSet fan.

That type of noise is normally associated with a CPU, chipset fan.. especially if its on its way out or clogged up with fluff... and will also account for the increased noise when the PC is doing something taxing, this has the fans increasing in speed to cool the parts down as they will be working harder, at times in many PCs this increase from a near silent fan sound to a noiser one is normal, so to check this install Everest Free and once installed click Computer > Sensor and note your temps.
