    Hi all,

Recently been having problems with my hdd. whenever i turn on my comp it starts making this high pitched whining noise. then it goes away after a few seconds, boots up fine. lately now its been making the noise for longer and unable to boot up. i investigated it further and its to do with the connection to the power. its as if its having troubling being read. so now i dare not turn off my comp in case i cant boot up again. is my hdd about to die?

its a Western Digital SATA HDD 600+gb. only got it under a year ago. its got all my stuff on it too!

I agree with Bold Eagle backup your data and get warranty service. Soon you may be getting SMART error messages.

i ran the diagnostic tool but everything came up a-ok. ran both the quick and extended tests.
and i just found out that i actually bought the hdd just OVER a year ago :( but i read on WD's website that their warranty covers for 3 years?? hopefully i read it correctly.

Yes it is 3 years but means it doesn't go back to point of sales but their outlet. You can isolate the closest to you on their website to minimise costing. As a point of interest are you sure it is the HDD or is there a fan right near it and that is failing?

    thanks.
you mean one of the casing fans? well i'm sure i've isolated it to the hdd and not the fan. i took unhook the sata power cable to the hdd and started my comp. no sound. also i probably shouldnt have done it but while the power was hooked up to the hdd and it was (trying to) booting up, i pulled the sata power cable and straight away the sound was gone. plus the sound i think is related to the hdd drive trying to be read (or spinning) to boot up.

It sounds like it may indeed be the HDD. If there is a case fan in front of it unplug it so you can get greater resolution.
