Hard drive errors

My hard drive seems to be getting errors A LOT lately. Twice this week it has been so bad that I have had to remove my hard drive from the PC and connect to my laptop via a IDE to USB converter and then perform a chkdsk on it to fix any errors. After chkdsk is done the hard drive works perfectly fine. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

 

The HD could be going bad. How old is it? I would suggest downloading the HardDrive Manufacturer's (usually WesternDigital or Seagate/Maxtor) Diagnostic Utility to see if it finds any errors. If you do the long test it will attempt repairs that may last longer than Chkdsk's fixes. If there are many errors it is only a matter of time before the HD fails for good. So back up any important personal data.

If the utility shows S.M.A.R.T. as bad get a replacement HD immediately. You only have a very short amount of time before your OS won't boot from my experience.

if you constantly have to chk dsk it in order to get it to boot into windows, it truely IS A MATTER OF TIME before it will no longer boot into windows. Drive's on it's last legs. You need to salvage anything you want on it. Transfer your files and setting onto a usb key or something. Then you can try to low level format it or something and run it as a secondary drive and see if it'll work well enough as that. If you still get errors on that drive, then it's toast!
