I tried installing win 7 on my netbook and there were only 2 partitions available. One was the system and one was the primary. But it wont allow me install on my primary partition or create a new one. It actually will let me install on it but it says not to because the hard drive could fail at any moment. I was wondering If I could take an external usb hd and install the OS on that instead? Does anyone know if that will work?

It's unlikely you'll be able to boot from an external USB HDD due to the copy protection measures written into Windows.

If there is not a "trap door" to access the hard drive on the bottom of your netbook, replacing the internal HDD will require removal of the keyboard and some internal cables. Unless you are experienced in disassembling and reassembling small electronics, this is a job best left to a professional tech. Don't get ripped off at Geek Squad or other big chain stores. A reputable independent PC shop should be able to do the work for about $60 labor plus the cost of a new drive.

    Hope this helps. :)
