    Can anyone help....

I have a compac Evo N410C laptop which was running Windows 2000. Due to errors etc, I tried format and install Windows XP. Everything seemed to be going fine until the format utility on the Windows CD got to 40% and then stopped.

I rebooted and went into repair console, Chkdsk /r gave me the following error message

"There is one or more unrecoverable problems" no result was forthcoming.

none of the other usual dos programs on the cd help.

has anyone got an idea if a low level format would repair the disk or if any utilities are available to fix the hard drive.

You could try a boot disk with diagnostics but it might just give you the same result as chkdsk.

I'm not going to link to the boot disk I use because I got my hand slapped last time. :)
