My husbands hard drive is running when no one is at my computer. It also runs like crazy when He is working at the computer. It slows things down to a crawl when this happens. I figured out the service that is running is one of the Host Process Windows Servers. Specifically PID 1168 which consists of the following descriptions.
Application Experience, Application Information,Background Intelligent Transfer Service,Computer Browser,Group Policy Client,IKE and Auth IP IPsec keying modules,IP helper, Remote Access Connection Manager,Server,Shell Hardware Detection,System Event Nofication Service,Task Scheduler,Themes,User Profile Service,Windows Management Instrumentation,Windows Update. Can I stop these from running?
He is running Windows 7 Home Premium service Pack 1 on Dell Studio XPS 435T 64bit. He is using the computer right now to for both business and personal and I need it to run really well right now I cannot fool with it because He is a CPA and needs to work. Any help is appreciated. I am pretty knowledgeable in computers and have fixed many of them) This has me really stumped. I don't want to stop anything that can cause a problem. The noise the harddrive is making is a loud motor like noise when it runs and no one is at it.
I checked all the schedules on the computer they are set for the middle of the night. So nothing should be running by itself during the day. He is also on a home network with one other computer.

Look carefully at START UP programs. If you have the program CCleaner
open Tools > Start Ups and see what launches when the system starts. If you are not sure which ones are needed and which ones are not then just post a screen shot of the list here. To be honest apart from security program/s most are not needed, especially auto updaters.
You can also look at Black Viper's recommended 'Safe' configuration for services in Win 7
    http://www.blackviper.com/service-c...dows-7-service-pack-1-service-configurations/

Right now this sounds more software than hardware, but not saying for certain.

Two things come to mind: it is checking for Windows updates today and/or it could be downloading Windows 10 in the background.

The file is attached. Keep in mind the computer is running the harddrive even when no one is sitting at it and the screen is dark.

Just noticed there are 5 start up files. Here are all files from CC cleaner

That's 23 enabled start ups alone. That is a lot. Anything that can be launched manually as and when needed doesn't need to be enabled at system start. You can probably reduce that to a handful at most.

As for startup programs, I recommend you check out WinPatrol. This is great little program. While the free one is nice, this is one of the very few programs I don't hesitate people purchase. It monitors your start up program and lets you disable or delay their startup.

As far as the HD running with the computer is not in use, that is actually normal. Windows does a lot of "housekeeping" chores when the user is idle. One thing that can make that HD activity more active is being low on free disk space. So running CCleaner to clean out the clutter can help. Uninstalling programs not used can too. Running defrag (after cleaning out the clutter) may help too.

And to be sure, did you scan for malware?

I see several instances of Carbonite in the first file (I only looked at the first item).
