hard drive/ lcd repiar and replacement question

I have a non working toshiba m45 s169 laptop I want to repair ( it has a few problems). I am a novice so that is why I am asking so many questions. Anyway, my HDD is making clicking/grinding noises and when it boots up it says it cannot find the OS and another driver is missing. It can boot up to cd etc but I was told my hard drive was fried and the best thing is too replace it not reformat. I have a 5400 rpm sata HDD, so do I just find a hard drive that has those things or do I need more info to make sure it is compatible w/ my system? Also, after replace, I can use right away? or do I need to do more things?

Another thing, I also have problem w/ lcd screen( turns white/gray initially, then if I move screen it would turn black with multicolored thin lines going vertically and sometimes the lines move the more I move screen). I have reseated the video cable but nothing has changed , so my question is if I get a new lcd screen, do I also need to replace inverter board as well ( and how to go about doing that).

basically, I need to pinpoint right issues w/ laptop so that I may fix it with your help

Clicking and grinding is a definate sign the drive is dead.. replace it with another sata 2.5" laptop drive. Once the new one is installed format it and install the OS.

And the screen sounds as though it needs replacing as well, you probably wont have to change the inverter board though. sounds as though the liquid crystals have busted.

 

Have you tried vga to external monitor? It might be your graphics card if it wont output to external screen, otherwise will be the screen. Does sound like the HD is knackered though! You can buy replacement screens quite cheaply from Ebay and some of the companies give you instructions on how to replace it yourself. Hope this helps.
