Explain turn power off before finishing?

Check your HDD cables, both IDE & Power
A bad or loose cable might be the problem

You can try ruining HDD diagnostic utility, the utility is free to download, Each HDD manufacture has them available for free, some are available here at MG, you just need to know the brand of HDD

The Brand will be printed directly on the HDD, you might have to remove it to read it.

Most likely it's WD, Maxtor or Seagate

If you had a power cut before OS was fully installed then I would strongly suggest reinstalling. Especially as you say, the drive was ok before.

Before you do though, try pulling a ribbon cable from another drive,CDROM or DVD and try it with your hard drive.
