My D partition has gone missing!

On startup, the the D partition of my hard drive was nowhere to be found. I used the Computer Management console, and saw that the partition was present, but was no longer named "D", so I reset the name to D.

So, now I can see the drive, but the system tells me that the partition is not formatted. (it was NTFS).

    Dell Latitude x300 laptop
    Two Partitions:
    C: 25.7 GB (NTFS)
    D: 30 GB (was NTFS)

I fear that since the system does not even recognize that it is a formatted drive, it may be hopeless.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!

You could try Partition Wizard. Particularly the Explore partition function which would let you know if it sees your files.

I'm not sure if it will allow you to explore the partition using the Windows based version since Windows says the drive is not formatted but it may. I would give it a try.

    D:\ partition...

D:\ hmm..the default for the CD\DVD device... unless you configured your Hard disk to use D:\ prior to this then, I think the issue is with the CD\DVD.

The first default partition after C:\ drive is E:\ by default. Again unless you have configured this differently.

A:\ Default for Floppy discs etc
B:\ Also old school but default for floppy.
C:\ First (default) primary partition where windows is installed - this can be configured differently during windows installation
D:\ default CD Rom DVD etc drive
E:\ all other Hard drives \ patitions \ usb flash or thumb drives etc...same for all other letters to Z:\

Have a look in your device manager see whats going on with a CD\DVD if you havent configured the Hard disks paths from the Windows defaults.

If you have added another Hard drive or limited amount of Hard drive letters this can be configured then you may have Had this.
Recently using XP SP3 I had restricted the amount of Drive letters that could be accessed, what happened when I put in a usb drive..well rather bizzare, there was already another drive that was a mapped netrork drive / folder and still had the icon for it got "tagged" with the mapped drive letter..at first I thought when i looked at my computer screen that the flash drive was faulty..not entirely uncommon, but no also.. no trojans malware nothing.. looks like XP was just trying to help out but got a little muddled.. the usb drive was there.. but had the mapped drives / folder icon and letter.. little confusing..

    good luck :waveL8r
