Hard drive problem

I just got an extra HDD for storage. So I plugged it in, went to "Computer Management", selected disk management and started to partition and format the new HDD. It was going well, up to 30% complete till I did something and it froze and stopped. Now, whenever I try to re-partition and format it, the % doesn't show anymore (after hours), I'm thinking it's not doing anything..., try again for another few hours and nothing.

I went to seagate's website and downloaded their "DiscWizard for Windows" and used that to partition/format the new HDD. After that, It's all good. But then I noticed that if I tried transferring files from my C drive to the new K drive and it's more than 1.7-1.9 GB, the transfer will just freeze and after like 2 min, I'll get a blue screen saying "stopped windows from operating, turn off your system now, etc." And I'm pretty sure it's 1.7-1.9 GB because it's happened 3 times with different files (adding up to that many GB).

Anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks.

Well ....ummm...no .....but lets pursue it some .....one thing you might want to do is remove the master drive and put the new one in as master ..then run the disc setup utility cd on it ....then put the master back in, rejumper the new one to slave and see how it is in disk management. Is it reported as active at this point?

The new HDD? Yea, it is active right now. Cept it freezes (then blue screen) my whole computer when I try transferring more than 1.8 or so GB.

What is the error code .....did you set it as a slave drive and put it on the middle connection of the IDE ribbon?

I'll have to check the code later, but I put it on the end of the ribbon (black) but put no jumpers on so it's read as a slave. The other one is in the middle but has jumpers set as master.

I tried setting it to cable select so the new one is the master, I put the XP cd in to install and tried formatting it there, but it just froze at 42%.

For correct hardware setup procedure, you should set your master HDD that includes your OS etc on the end of the IDE ribbon (black) with the jumpers at the rear, configured to master. (on the primary IDE channel)
Your new HDD that you are using for storage should be set to the middle connector (grey plug) on the same ribbon, and the jumpers at the rear configured to slave settings!
When formatting the new addition, make sure that you use the same file format as the other drive. ( ie. NTFS, Fat 32 etc)

    Regards...

Hmm didn't know that, the computer came with the middle connector plugged in so I just used the end part. Do you think that was what was causing the problems like it freezing? After so many failed formats (and canceling midway cause it froze), does that affect the HDD?

In a word ...yes. Some newer setup like both drives set to cable select ..some as master/slave .....but the master should always be the last connection and the slave the middle connection ....check the jumpers for both drives, swap them as directed and you should be ok.

Well, I switched it and it still freezes when I try to transfer more than 1.7 GB. How long does a full format for a 320 GB HDD take? Quick format works but a full one doesn't since not even 1 bar moves after 20 min or so. I guess it's defective.

    Windows xp ......sp/2?
Have you downloaded seagates disk checking utility ....?

    Yes, I have SP2.

I'm not sure where to find it on their website.

Sometimes after freezing and having to power down my comp, it says S.M.A.R.T. status bad hard drive or something and doesn't even boot. Sometimes after formatting it again, it "works" again until I try transferring over 1.6 GB and it'll freeze again.

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) is designed as an early warning diagnostic that checks the drive's actual physical health, not the state of your software. If you've been getting warnings from it, your drive IS dying. The good thing about SMART is that it can warn you early enough to save all your stuff and replace the drive before it dies, leaving your stuff lost.

I'd recommend downloading and installing Speedfan, which among other useful functions, can run and display detailed S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic tests. You can grab it here:

You can read about SMART technology here. This is from Seagate, but most all the drive manufacturers incorporate it today.

Is the hard drive a new hard drive? Just a thought but have you tried just using the "new" drive load the OS on it and see if it works properly? No crashes, no blue screens.. If you have some time to kill I would try that. It is quite possible could be a defective drive.

Yes it is a "new" hard drive. And I've tried that. The source of the problem is, that it freezes during a full-format. Quick one works, but not a full. I looked it up and it said that I should do a chkdsk if I have never done a full-format and just did a quick one. But that freezes as well.

On the computer management, it says it's healthy.

My only other suggestion would be install the drive in another PC (If one is available) and see if it exhibits the same behavior.
I think you may have a defective drive, especially if you have done everything else from the previous posts.

Well, is the HDD freezing when transferring files and freezes when doing a full format an common indication of a faulty Hard drive?
