i posted yesterday about beeping computer and unbootable. well after checking RAM and finding it was fine i put the HDD in my computer which did the same thing. i presume its dead (or is it?) anyway the drive is spinning but error message is there now "media problem" check cable and so on. could i reset settings in bios because i think it may be to do with deleting duplicate files. the HDD in question is 160gb seagate barracuda 7200.7 ultra ATA. does anyone think its dead or just needs resetting?

install it as a second drive in another pc and see if you can access it.

set the jumpers on the first and second drive as master and slave. You are doing this on a second computer that is working and isn't having problems to test the drive from the broken pc.

i got the 2nd hdd running on mine and it was fine afterall. only thing i had left to do was a COMPLETE recovery because it wouldn't do a partial! still a mystery why it all happened in first place but must have been OS cos hardware is fine. thanks for your trouble
