hard drive question

my boss just bought a new hp desktop computer........his laptop quit working due to the board.......he took the hard drive out of the laptop...and bought a case for it to inable him to power and install it using usb....

when we hook it to the hp desktop using usb.it doesnt install it..........the direction says windows xp should recognize it and install the drivers

i told him it might be because it has a operating system on it...and being his hp does too,, its a conflict....any ideas??

 

Sometimes it is because the USB is under powered. Some drive cases have external power supplies, some you have to buy, it depends on the drive I think. I have some that use 2 USB ports or a dongle for a usb and ps2 connection.
Try a powered hub or different ports...

 

Is there a possibility that the laptop drive you pulled out might be fried due to what ever jacked up the mobo? What happened to the laptop?

 

hi the case he bought has one cord to power it usb.......and another usb cord.

it lights up green like it working......but it very well could be fried

his laptop......they said it needed a new board....and they would have to find a used one off ebay.........i brought the hard drive home......im going to see if it will work on my computer........or disconnect my hard drive and see if his will boot up

i couldnt even get into his bios on his hp thanks for the help

 

oh and i thought i glanced on.something about being windows xp uses ntfs file system....that you cant use two operating systems.......that you had to go back to fat32 not sure though

 

hey never mind i plugged it into my two usb ports and it installed...now i just need to save anything i can to cd for him...thanks guys.......im still not sure why it didnt work on his computer
