I have a laptop that I need to replace the hard drive in. I was wondering if there are any potential/actual problems with going from 5200 RMP to 7200 RPM in a laptop. I have heard it may cause overheating, is this true?

Possible shorter battery life. If higher speed drives made computers blow up, they would have been pulled off the market a long time ago.

In the research I've seen, the impact on battery life is minimal - 2 or 3 percent at most.

On the plus side, I've noticed an improvement in access times when searching for a specific photo or document in large folders.

Spend a few bucks more and get the WD Scorpio Black series. They have a 5-year warranty and are bulletproof compared to cheap drives like Hitachi.
