Hard drive question

One of the guys upstairs had his hard drive fail. The drive is from an G4 system, it's a Maxtor 30 GB drive with the Apple logo on it. The G4 which is running panther, and a G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2 will not find the drive. Putting it in an XP pro system it will recognize the hard drive as being there but it won't mount it (obviously) but putting it in a linux machine I can mount it but it has the desktop.df, where are my files?, and a few others totaling 427KB, but he said he was using 17GB. Any ideas as the what would cause the G3&4 systems to not recognize the drive?

 

also I forgot qtparted 0.4.4 (Linux utility like Partition Magic) says there is no partition table on the drive, when the drive is mounted or unmounted. Also the drive in question started as a slave in a OS 9.2 machine, if I've been properly informed.
