Let me give you my PC specs...

Antec Tru Power 430 watt Power Supply
WD 160 gig hdd IDE connection
WD 160 gig hdd Sata connection
    Lite on Cd Burner
    Ben Q DVD burner
    2 gigs Corsair TwinX2048-3200C2
    Antec Case Fan Rear

I just recently put in the Corsair ram, and the WD 160 gig sata hdd. I have plenty of air flow space and am running 1 antec 80 mm fans, plus a cpu fan/cooler.

I am getting a reading of ...54 degrees Celsius one one drive(way too much), and 31 degrees celsius on the other(well within normal specs).

What is going on? Should I add another rear case fan? Is this an accurate reading. The inside of the case does not feel hot at all, I actually have the side panel off.

The case I have, has room for 2 rear fans, but I do not know where I would hook up the 2nd fan. The first fan is running off my PS, I looked for a fan connector on my board but could not find one.

Could anyone offer any ideas, or suggestions on where to hook up a 2nd fan on my mobo, or just what may be causing this?

    Thanks
    Alan

The likelyhood of your HD temp being 54c is extremely low, the bearing in the harddrive would be so damaged the harddrive wouldnt work, the only other way it can get so hot would be induced heat from a nearby component the chance of which is very slim unless your hardrive is above the cpu or video card, what cpu and video card do you have? Also without the manufacturer and model number of your motherboard its impossible to point you toward a system fan header.

What temp monitoring program are you using,I would suspect its an error in either the detected temp or the indentification of the harddrive as having the high temp,at 54 degress the drive will feel very hot to touch,if you touch it and your first reaction isnt 'wow that feels hot' its a sensor or software error.

Try using speedfan to check temps, also click the smart tab, select the drive in question and note its fitness and performance :)

    I am actually using Speedfan.

I have a gigabyte KNS Ultra 939 mobo, but I was able to find out where to hook up the other fan, so I now have one intake and one out take for the fans.

Anyhow I did what you suggested and clicked the smart tab and here is what I came back with..

    ------------
    First one

Your hard disk is a WDC WD1600JB-00GVA0 with firmware 08.02D08.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 34C (MIN=25C MAX=44C) and yours is 39C.
Your hard disk's S.M.A.R.T. attributes are now being analyzed and a full report about the reliability, health and status of your hard disk is generated:
Your hard disk is not below any attribute threshold. This is good.
Your hard disk was never below any attribute threshold. This is good.
Your hard disk is now being compared to real data used to define normal values for your specific hard disk model. This way, the analysis can automatically use proper operating ranges. The images give you an idea of how each attribute is within such range. Current and raw values are shown for easier reference for experienced users. There are 399 hard disk models in the current archive.

All of the attributes of your hard disk have normal values. This is good.

The overall fitness for this drive is 98%.
The overall performance for this drive is 98%.
    ------------

    2nd One

Your hard disk is a WDC WD1600JS-60MHB1 with firmware 10.02E02.
Your hard disk is not in the current database.
An hard disk with the same model, but with a different firmware was found:
The average temperature for this hard disk is 46C (MIN=35C MAX=59C) and yours is 58C.
New hard disks are added as soon as valid statistics can be computed.
Come back soon to check your hard disk against a new database.
Your hard disk's S.M.A.R.T. attributes are now being analyzed and a full report about the reliability, health and status of your hard disk is generated:
Your hard disk is not below any attribute threshold. This is good.
Your hard disk was never below any attribute threshold. This is good.
Since your hard disk is not in the current database, overall ratings and pictures will be based upon realistic values, but you should carefully check the results.

NOTE: not all warnings are reflected on fitness and performance overall values as relevancy is based upon the settings from the hard disk manufacturer who is the best entity deputed to define such relationships.

The overall fitness for this drive is 94%.
The overall performance for this drive is 98%.

Should I disregard the temp readings?

Touch it,at 58c it will feel red hot!,if it aint disregard the temp, the drive is healthy enough :)

Nope, neither even feel the slightest bit warm...guess I am ok then?

What could be causing to get that faulty of a read?

Because Speedfan does not recognize the firmware of the drive.

Same with me and Everest. It doesn't even show my cpu and mb temperature.

Would doing a firmware update get proper temp reads?

Doubt it. Speeedfan is probably what needs the update.

Oh well, not a big deal. Just kinda freaked me out when I saw it today. I had never bothered to even run a program like that before.

I bought 2 new case fans today for nothing then...lol

I wanted to see what my HD was running at, turns out 47c, that was interesting and good to know.

So I closed speedfan and noticed something interesting.

I had the side of my case off because I had done a RAM upgrade a few minutes ago and noticed both, my CPU fan, and Case fan stopped dead.

Computer was still on and functional so I tried opening speedfan back up to get them running and it didn't, had to turn off pc and once restarted uninstall speedfan.

    Be warned.
