Hard Drive Soldered In

I purchased this Lenovo on sale as a work around for a problem that happened with my everyday computer. I mostly wanted it to 1: Check my email and 2 to pay my bills from my online banking site.

This little Lenovo was more than what I needed in a few ways but when the computer maker bundles a computer with Windows 10 Pro I take it even if I don't need it.

I was not thrilled about it having a 32 Gig hard drive so I purchased at the same time a 100 GB SDD external drive.

Long story short ( I hope ) just the windows updates filled up the hard drive that came with this Lenovo in a very short period of time. Now I have updates waiting to be installed but there isn't enough room for what is waiting.

The only program I installed was a virus protection. I'm guess that it's the updates that filled up the " hard drive " that came with this beast.

I've tried to delete and move everything that has a date after I purchased it but I still have these messages about not having enough room. It occurs to me that over time the updates alone will always trump the available space.

I called a shop recommended by a friend and they want about 50% of what I paid for the computer " to look at it " That doesn't make sense to me especially not knowing if they will fix the problem or tell me that it needs a bigger HDD that needs to be soldered in so here I am writing to MG with updates waiting to be installed which I know what happens: a waste of time and no resolution.

    Any fixes for this problem?

I'm posting here in the lounge hoping that this is the right forum for this post.

I've managed to take care of my computers fairly well until a few years ago. Whatever happened back then it seemed to make more sense to buy a new laptop instead of trying to find out what was causing the problems in my main computer . The laptop that I purchased was the last one in the store so the price was excellent. I knew that it was a Windows 8.1 which at first made the purchase even more attractive but it quickly turned into such a hot mess that I jumped on the free update to windows 10 which did not solve all of the problems so with-in a month or so I purchased yet another i3 economy laptop which right out of the box had problems and Best Buy wanted me to bring it back to their Geek Squad to check it out. Best Buy is 19 miles one way from my home. I got to the store as the opened and was first in line. They attempted to resolve the issue for about 3 hours. At that point they got a new one off the shelf and the problem I was having did not exist in the one off the shelf so they replaced the bad one and it served me well for about a year until I made a mistake that I've never made before: I allowed a so called " tech person " access to my PC. I wasn't having problems with the laptop I was having problems with Amazon so the so called tech person was supposedly from Amazon.
Suddenly everything started closing and before all access stopped I got a message to check my email with a different computer which told me my Amazon account had been hacked so Amazon closed it down and I immediately unplugged my laptop.

That was about a year ago and since then I've purchased 4 more laptops trying to find normal again.

Before I attempt to fix all problems I want to know how to go about resolving any of the problems.

The soldered PC issue is already here in Major Geeks. But maybe what needs to be done first is to simply detail the problems with each of the PC's and get an opinion on which laptop I should focus on.

    Does that make sense?

According to these specs, it came with a 64GB SSD. I see another version with a 128GB SSD. Are you sure it is soldered in?

Can you access the BIOS and change the boot order to put the exterior drive first?

64GB eMMC, so almost certainly soldered onto the 'board on the assembly line.

While the "e" in eMMC is for "embedded", it does not automatically mean it has been soldered directly to the motherboard. But I bet satrow is right because that Lenovo is a budget computer and soldering directly to the main board saves money (no socket) and space. It also has the advantage is being more "rugged" since it cannot be knocked or vibrated loose.

Also interesting that I can't copy and past in a lot of places on this PC

In " about this PC this is what it says:
    SYSTEM
    Processor Celeron N3060@ 1.60GHz
    installed mem ( RAM) 4.ooGB ( 3.86 GB usable )
sys type 64 bit x64 based
Pen and Touch 10 Touch Points

    also Windows 10 PRO

    Local Storage This PC (C:)
28.8 GB used out of 29.1

It was advertised as 32 GB

There are updates waiting to download. If I turn the computer off it tries to figure out where to put the downloads and then when it restarts it struggles to know what to do and it takes forever to reboot that I get all kinds of messages about how and where to move things but I've run out of places to move things.

I can attempt to fuss with the bios and maybe then it will allow things to go into the 128 ULTRA micro sd that I have in the slot.

There is a place that itemizes where everything is

    Found it:

    sys and reserve 18.4

    apps 6.64

    other 2.20 GB

    temp files 1.36 GB

    documents 61. MB

    mail 14.5

    desktop 6.MB

    one drive 392 KB

    pictures 12 kb

You could upgrade specs from those for very little cost.

Or you can chase your ass on an outdated system :)

We bought an Acer Aspire (for my Mom) running Windows 10.
It cost $275 and has a removable 5oo GB HDD.

Laying down the file system (formatting with NTFS or FAT 32 as examples) to prepare a drive for data takes up some space. So the available space on a drive will always be less than the advertised "raw" space regardless if using 1000 bytes per kilobyte, or 1024.

    To ALL:
Much thanks to everyone who has pointed me to links and shared their thoughts.
A short FYI about disappearing from time to time. Besides issues at times related to what's posted ( the Lenovo is running on empty and consequently fights me from time to time and truth be known I dream about setting it up for target practice. If it wasn't for my fear of losing some masterpiece that I started writing on that piece of Garbage I'd run, not walk to the back yard and decide if the execution would be given to one demise of several; I confess that the 12 gauge comes to mine first. But the sadist in me wants to start with an air pistol that was purchased in the 1950's and got passed down to me from Grandfather to my Dad then my Dad to me in 1970. It still works and is damn accurate so I think about wounding it then moving up the list: 22 rifle, 22 Mag pistol, 380 Beretta , 38 Bankers Special, 357 Python, 41 Mag S&W Model 57, and then if anything is left: The 12 Gauge. I know it's a bit of over kill but it would be worth the effort if I can film the whole assassination sending the film to Lenovo besides posting it on you Tube.
It's not original because I remember the first time I saw an execution of an Apple by a Dad who asked his daughter nicely to do her homework and when he caught her ignoring his request he made a short documentary of his shooting the MAC with a 45 Cal. It took 2 shots through the center of the screen and damn it, it still turned on. Not sure if that was a statement about Apple, his choice of spots to shot it, or maybe it was other things. But it made it to the local news then the national news, it didn't go without pointing out that he was charged for discharging a firearm with-in the city limits and Apple sent his daughter a brand new replacement.

I hope I'm not breaking any rule here by admitting what I'd like to do to the laptop and I do not expect to get a replacement from Lenovo. I think Lenovo will ignore this who thing mostly because the real issue(s) will not be addressed mostly because Lenovo will never be apple

I'm going to explore all of your suggestions to see if I can resolve the issue and if so how much dollars and sense it will take

There is another issue that I will write about in a separate post. I suspect that there exists and answer but before I even write about it and include in the post all that I have tried to to to get a simple correct answer and somewhere I'd like to ask why it seems near impossible to resolve things.

You people who read these posts and attempt to give your best advice are the core example of how a well oiled system should work.

Thanks to all of you with special note to the people with the original idea that you saw through and made happen.

Sorry again if I'm too long in the tooth about my praise for The GEEK Squad
