Hard Drive woes

    Howmanator Corporal

    What can be done to stop/limit constant activity on hard drive while gaming?
    I shut down most non-essential processes, turn off anti-virus(though in game it tries to update), disconnect the internet. I defrag often and run programs to keep the registry clean. My Hdd is partitioned. What I notice is that with Gothic 3, whenever I shoot an arrow into an npc, the game stutters before registering the hit.

    The game is basically always pulling information off the drive and into the game, so there's not really anything that can be done. Check the settings on the game and try playing at a lower resolution if the game supports it.

    Also make sure you have the latest version of DirectX which is 9 on XP. There's a download here on Majorgeeks for it.

    Yeah, I thought about that after playing with msconfig. Gothic 3 is horrible when it comes to optimization. I'm playing Far Cry 2 at the moment and the Dunia engine as well as the coding are so spot on that with all the huge explosions and all the waving grass,trees and other foliage it never skips a beat even at the very highest settings my rig can handle. Oblivion, Crysis and both Stalker titles on the other hand are terrible with grass. Anywhew, I guess I'm getting the best I can out of G3 with my present setup.
