Did you set the jumpers to make the old hard drive the slave?

So you have the new drive set as the master (positioned on the end of the cable) and the old drive in the middle of the cable(but jumpers set to master)...if I'm getting this right.

I think there should be some bad abbreviations for how to set the jumpers on the old harddrive. If you look closely around the jumpers you might be able to figure them out by seeing if any of the markings match up with how the jumpers are set for master. You could also go to the manufacturer's website probably Western Digital or Maxtor. The jumpers are probably consistent across their products. What brand is the old one? I have diagrams for both of those brands.

Oh just to be sure how you've set things up--have you loaded your operating system on the new drive?

yup, its all working fine, except the problem where I cant get stuff off the old HD. I'll look at the jumpers later to day.

I have the same probem, my slave drive shows up in the device manager but nowhere else. I have played around in computer management but I'm just running in circles

    texasblueliner,

I would suggest the same thing make sure your jumpers are set correctly. On your slave drive the jumpers have to be set according to the drive's manufacturer not the new drive's manufacturer. The manufacturer's website will usually let you search by model number to find the correct settings.

If you're not sure of jumper settings, you can always hook up the drive in question to the cable that the CD drive is connected to (disconnecting the CD temporarily). That way it's on it's own channel as a master drive and no other device is on the cable or channel to interfere with it. 'Cuz the drive was originally jumpered as a master (or cable select) it should be OK on it's own cable......

It says on the harddrive to run as a slave you dont need to put a jumper on it. I just don't understand why it would show up in the device manager but nowhere else

I'm assuming that you put the new hard drive on the last IDE connection and the old one in the middle IDE connection ...you may have to set both drives to cable select ....
