    I run disk defragmenter once a week; however, I first have to run a thorough scan disk every time or defragmenter will not run because it says there are errors on the drive. Are errors on the disk data surface an indication that the HD is going bad or not necessarily? Could these errors be caused by insufficient system resources?

    I would say to run a Thoural(pardon the spellin) scan , which can take forever. The full surface scan I mean, and set it to automatically fix errors. I hope for you it is as easy as that.
    I had the same problem once, and it worked . :)

    I do run a thorough scan every time; errors are found every time. Thorough scan disk always repairs all of the errors. The question is, does this mean the hard drive is failing? Are there other causes of such errors?

    Have you run a full virus and spyware sweep?
    As Jazagod says, it doesn't necessarily mean the drive is going to die, but if it were me, I'd want to start making sure I had backups of all important stuff - just in case.
    Do you know what make and model the HDD is? You may be able to download a disk-checking utility from the manufacturer's website.

    It is a maxtor drive; I did run the maxtor Powermax and it said there was no problem with the drive. However, it is abnormal to have to run a thorough scan disk once a week just to repair errors and be able to run defragmenter. I run antivirus once a week, and regularly use Adaware, Spybot, and Spysweeper. Could this be malware that is undetectable? How likely is it that malware can cause errors on the disk surface? I am also using windows ME if that makes a difference.

    When I run scandisk in safe mode, I get the message that scandisk is repeatedly interrupted because something is writing to the hard drive. Of course malware is suspected as the cause of this, but I have been told that windows me may also cause this. Any ideas?

    Sorry matey, I'm at a loss on this one.
    Did happen accross this page, which describes a similar problem...

    I guess if that solves it, at least you'll know it's probably software rather than hardware related.
    Good luck.

    matt1;

    I had a problem something like this one with a maxtor drive and email/called

    warranty and they sent out a replacement drive.
