My desktop crashed. It shut down quickly but I think it said something to the effect of issues with memory. My diagnostic CD that came with it says it cannot find hard drives to repair. I put in my software CD to try to re-install XP, but again, no hard drives. I can get into my BIOS. But other than the CDs that came with and BIOS I cannot get into my computer. Has my computer met its demise?

Thank you o'mighty intelligent ones. :)

Check your Cables, power & interface (SATA or IDE what ever ya have)
Hard drives as in more than one?

It might also help to provide more info on your PC?
    Brand/Model etc. specs please

I went and checked all the cables, power, etc. I had the pc built by tigerdirect.com about 4 (could even be 5) years ago. It's a Tiger Systemax, AMD running on XP. As far as specs go, that's all I know because I can't remember the rest and can't get into it. :(

My diagnostic CD doesn't work. I tried to run Hardware Diag. from the CD and gives me this error, "Not ready reading drive J" I don't recall drive J. I have a floppy drive, the harddrive, a partition and CD drive.
I tried my software CD to re-install XP. That's is where I got the message that it can't find the harddrive. Didn't mean to say harddrives in my first post. Yesterday I tried the software CD again. It gave me a blue screen that time and the error message was "Primary master hard disk fail" and it said the suspected problem was partmgr.sys. It recommended turning off caching and shadowing in the bios. That didn't improve anything.

There is a repetitive clicking that happens when I have it turned on. I have a feeling that there is no hope since I can't get to anything except bios.

Unfortunately, I haven't backed up since the summer. I have a LaCie HD (320 gb). I don't keep that plugged into my pc-only plug it in when I back up. Wish I would have done that lately!

More than not, a clicking sound from the hard drive is usually a sign of 'mechanical failure', and time to replace the drive!

Hehe.....that would be my wish too!

    Goodluck anyway!

    Regards...
