hi all i dont know where to go for this or where to exactly post so i thought i should post here...I have a custom computer that i have replaced a lot of parts hoping it would fix my issue..unforunately that is not the case...I constantly hard hang and freeze and dont know why..maybe you all can help me...

    my specs:
    win 7 64 bit
8 gb ddr3 ram corsair vengence( recently RMA'ed and replaced)
1 TB WD caviar black( brand new out of the box)
ASUS motherboard(brand new out of the box)
AMD Phenom II dual core 3.4 ghz black edition
brand new corsair 700 watt PSU(brand new as well)

the only thing that hasnt been replaced or rma'ed is the CPU..i dont know if that is the problem...Unforunately these hard hangs lead to no minidumps etc..i dont know what the problem is or where to start..im at a loss for answers and thought i would come to Major Geeks! for some major Geeky people to help me lol..thanks all i am willing to provide whatever information necessary in order to see what the problem is and get it fixed...

    Regards,

    Jon

It's an ASUS: check that you have no motherboard utilities like a software overclocker installed, especially one that uses the 2005 version of ASACPI.sys Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility (a known BSOD maker in Win7). Also a part of the Asus PCProbe and AISuite Utilities http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx

Check in Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices > Non-plug and play > ATK0110 ACPI Utility < check Properties for the driver date. Look for an updated version from ASUS for your 'board model.

If it's part the software, just uninstalling it should be enough. Get the PC stable on drivers only, no overclocking or tweaking anything until it's proven stable.

    hey thanks for the reply...

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard

thats my motherboard..im pretty tech savvy etc...i dont overclock my computer whatsoever..run it on stock settings cuz frankly thats all i need..im unsure if i actually have that utility...just because i run an asus board i would have that? i have all my drivers completely up to date as well..ill check to see if i have that in device manager..if i dont should i go and download it? if i do..like you said go and get the most up to date part of it?

yeah i dont have that utility its not under those non plug and play in the device manager

If you have PCProbe listed in Programs, uninstall it, if you have the 2005 version of ASACPI.sys (ATK0110 ACPI Utility) in Device Manager as above, update it.

This may be tricky then Jon,

BSOD's are most commonly caused by software/drivers or incompatible/incorrectly set/faulty hardware. But without a real BSOD report, dump or 0x******** code, we're pretty limited in trying to narrow it down.

Was Windows installed from DVD or USB?

You have a black edition Phenom II (555?), is it set correctly at stock speed and not overclocked or core unlocked?

Exactly what model 'board and what's the exact code for the RAM? Is the RAM speed/voltage correctly set in the BIOS? We'll need to check that they're really compatible.

The Corsair PSU, which model# and (*X?) range is it? They have different ranges made by different companies for them, some are very good quality, others are less so.

Have the same problems been consistent across all the hardware used?

Which SATA port/chipset is the hard drive connected to? Many 'boards have 2 controllers with different makers chipsets.

Have you run any bootable diagnostics on the hardware? RAM, CPU, hard drive? Results?

Can you run DriverView x64, set it to hide Microsoft and Windows entries and attach a jpeg screenshot of the resulting drivers please? If you limit the column views to name, path and date only, you can make the window a little smaller and you won't need to reduce scale to fit inside any forum upload limits.

    1. From DVD
    2. Yes as far as i know in the MoBo its set to auto...never overclocked but i can unlock cores and have done so in the past...could that cause a problem? AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Processor HDZ550WFGIBOX
    3. ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
---when you say code for the RAM? i bought 8 GB DDR3 corsair vengence...1600 mhz. 240 pin.
4.Corsair - Gaming Series 700-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply its the GS-700 one.
    5. yes all the problems have been the same with new hardware etc.
    6. on that specific motherboard it is plugged into the SATA1 port. theres like 6 of them haha but i plugged it into SATA1.
7.Yes everything has come back clean on the testing...
    8. i will run the driver test when i get home tonight.

Hope this might be able to help..as far as configurating the Bios and CPU on that motherboard im beginner level so i dont particularly know what to change as far as that...possibly you can help me with that?

To check that your PC is set correctly to save minidumps, follow Caliban's tutorial.

    From the screenshot:
Update (latest version is 12.4, alt. try the 12.1) the ATI/AMD graphics card drivers using the 'drivers only' method outlined here. To do this successfully, you need to fully uninstall the ATI graphics drivers and everything else listed by, and including, the CCC, use DriverSweeper to ensure they're gone - then proceed with the above 'drivers only' install routine.

AsIO (AsIO.sys Asus PCProbe Utility http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx) or a very similar package, please track it down in Programs and uninstall it.

    Update Rt64win7.sys Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...d=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Once completed, continue testing as normal, if you get a BSOD, look for the minidump(s) in C:\Windows\Minidump, copy them to your Desktop, zip and attach them please.

  12. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

okay i have done all the following only thing that i wasnt able to do was get rid of AsIO.sys

there is nothing in the programs that would be able to remove it etc.

  13. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

completed everything like i said but yet it still decided to hard hang...it just sits there frozen..doesnt do anything...in order to reboot the machine i actually have to sit there and power it down and power it back up.

  14. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Ok, keep using it until you have a dump to upload - or set Driver Verifier (follow the details here) on 3rd party drivers and reboot to activate it, then continue until you have a dump saved to upload.

If you don't get a dump, it may be because a Windows security driver failed before or during the dump, I'm unsure as to how to deal with that possibility, I'll look around.

Try to note down anything running and what the PC was doing in the few minutes before any crash.

  15. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

well thats the problem i mean im sitting here and could be doing anything...it freezes/hangs in the bios...IE...updates...thers no pattern that i have seen yet...

  16. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

other thing i noticed is the power on cycle is very slow and doesnt work sometimes as well..like ill power it on...and nothing happens...no boot no nothing..i got a feeling something is wrong with this mother board again or the bios just arent set properly..like right now im on my laptop and trying to get the damn thing to just boot...NOTHING...

  17. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Well that rules out anything software. Hardware, BIOS, settings are pretty much all that's left - do some serious research on whether your specific memory sticks are compatible with your motherboard, then check for the correct memory settings to manually input into the BIOS - don't rely on auto-anything.

Look for your 'boards memory QVL list in the support section for the M4A79XTD EVO, are your exact sticks listed?

Check the verified owners reports for both memory and 'board over at NewEgg, are owners of both complaining? Any claim they work fine together?

  18. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

welp on the QVL my ram isnt even listed on that ..its got corsair products but not my specific ram... >..> could that really be it?

  19. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

I had similar trouble with corsair ram- try a single stick of ram, and see if it freezea- I had to use one in the QVL list as satrow suggested, and the trouble went away

  20. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

well that completely ruins the fact i bought 8 GBs..lol. but ill give it a shot when i go home tonight...personally i dont know what would cause the machine to hard hang like that..any ideas?

  21. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

Other than the ram- you could try the one stick , and check these reminders
I do not see what graphics card(s) you have-
If you can load windows- go to event viewer (start/right click my computer /click manage/click event viewer.) Look into critical, error, warning and information- it may givre you, or, us more clues. Whilst in computer management, check in device manager for any yellow warning dots -and especially, look at display adaptors (if it has a problem, it should show there, and if you have updated the driver, it could be worth rolling back the driver. Graphics cards can be fussy, and the latest drivers are not always the best for them.
Check the connections of the sata and power leads to the hard drive (I have had to change the sata cable before now, when it was not fitting as tightly as I felt it should)
Do the same with your dvd writer.
Sometimes its worth checking the fan on the cpu is spinning (we don't always look for the obvious)
Re-seat the graphics card. At least it will eliminate the more obvious ones.
    :hammer

  22. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

for sure man thanks for the insight..i have reseated the graphics card and it still crashed..took out one of the ram chips still crashed...this time thought it didnt hard hang but instead just straight up rebooted itself...waiting for it to come back on to go to eventviewer etc...and see if it dropped a minidump as well.

  23. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

yeah i mean no joke now i cant even get the damn thing to boot back up...all it does is sit therer and doesnt boot up to bios or anything...

  24. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

i wonder if updating the bios has cuased the issue...or could fix it i dont know?

  25. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

If it has happened since updating the bios, then that is another possibility-
It could be worth disconnecting power supply, typically, press start button to discharge residual power, then move the cmos reset cap from pins 1 and 2 and put on to pins 2 and 3 leave for about 15 minutes, then replace the cap on pins 1 and 2. Connect power and restart.

  26. jbisaha

    jbisaha Private E-2

well as far as it crshing etc no..but as far as the no POST boot etc..its been doing that since i updated the bios.

Yes, it certainly looks that way.

Sorry I can't find an easy fix for you, that's the way it is sometimes.

You might scan the manuals for the 'board, CPU and RAM to make sure they are all setup correctly in the BIOS, there maybe something hidden in there - if it's set to autodetect, I'd certainly want to try it manually or on safe settings.

Before lashing out the dosh - have a look here-asus support
Hard hang and restart problems seem to often be related to Bios version, Scroll down to your cpu in the list and click go, and this one appears graphics card related
    .

The hardware warning in Windows 7 from Microsoft
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3567.aspx

Apparently AMD used to have a Machine Check Exception Analysis Tool, but I cannot find it right now.
There were suggestions to uninstall the Asus ATK0110 ACPI driver if installed (Ithink satrow mentioned that)
Sleep/Hibernate functions did cause problems in XP , I seem to remember, and it is an outside thought.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504
Scenario 3 The system randomly restarts and no Stop error BugcheckCode is listed, or the computer is completely unresponsive (hard hang)
The obvious other things would be cpu paste, and correctly seated cpu,
Why not try the old way of eliminating- just one stick of ram- disconnect everything else including hard drive and dvd- see if it boots into bios ok, then add one at a time.
Also have you another spare old stick of ddr3 ram to try it with ?

Updating the BIOS on a machine that's as unstable as this one could brick it.

Asus shows the M4A79XTD EVO BIOS 2102 on your cpu, as the one to correct the graphics card hang problem. If yours is an earlier one, then I would suggest you should , but as Satrow says, being unstable and flashing the bios is risky.
Bios flashing is always a risk, unless you follow the instructions fully.
This one appears to be in zip format, . so as long as the pc runs o.k and does not shut down when flashing, you should be o.k
Read up here just to be sure- methods of updating Asus bios

Remember it is at your own risk if updating bios chips- we might do it quite often, as geeks, but it can ' brick it.' as satrow has said.
What graphics card have you got ?

Hmm, interesting, I just ran some different queries on the minidump to find the BIOS revision of your 'board and came up with:
If you can get into Windows, run SFC /scannow and follow any prompts please, note the log file location and any errors you see. Find, zip and attach the log please.

The more I think about it, and the more I look for similar scenarios, I keep coming back to hard drive, or possibly a graphics driver.
I would suggest you click start, right click computer, click manage, and then click disc management, right click the partition you are working in,click properties, click tools, in the little box that comes up, tick both boxes, click start, then click on schedule disc check on restart, on the next little box. Close all and restart, and it should run CHKDSK, and attemp any repairs.
I find in windows 7 it seems to just give a quick command box that dissapearsif done from the search box at the start button, so this way should ensure it does a check.
Also if you updated the graphics driver, it could be worth rolling it back to a previous one, or, uninstalling it and restarting so that it finds its driver again.
Running sfc /scannow with the disc in the dvd drive can sometimes find a corrupted driver (just keep clicking retry- can take an hour on a very large hard drive, though.

Best start a new thread with yourproblem, and computer specs, sp that it gets picked up by others on majorgeeks- it can get missed when hijacking another thread.

hmm so i took off my cpu fan/heatsink and from what it looks like there is no thermal compound on the fan or the cpu chip...thats a big problem...no? lol..

    • My favourite saying- Sometimes the obvious eludes us - I had one a few years ago, that Denise had not fitted the stand ofs on the motherboard properly- so it could very well be an answer- See how it goes with something like artic silver ceramic paste, or, similar- only a thin scrape with an old credit card works for me.--Let us know how it goes.:-o

bahah yeah man i know i feel like an idiot..im really hoping thats all that is causing the hanging man...Question though..why would not having thermal paste cause the PC to hard hang though? im not seeing the connection between the two...

A little drop of thermal paste aids the heat transfer between the CPU and heatsink and thus makes the cooling much more efficient.

    baklogic The Tinkerer

I would think that you were very lucky- I have seen cpu's burnt out when no paste is there- as Satrow said aids heat transfer, and that means simoply that the fan and heatsibk need a near perfect 'seat' -the paste fills the faint scores/pitting in the metal surfaces to make the heatsink work efficiently-it is quite possible that the cpu was gettind a bit too hot, none of us suggested checking temperatures- and we should have.
Let us know how things go- solved , or, not.

hey guys! great news was able to hop on my desktop finally and play some games without crashing etc!! looks like the thermal compound helped it extensively hahahah...gosh what an idiot i am...

on that note. i did get two BSODs for the same error... IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

no minidumps though which is odd idk why...ill see if i can pull up more information possibly for yas.

    thanks again.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is usually a bad driver, revisit #14 and turn on Driver Verifier for 24-36 hours or until you have a dump saved. Or run Driverview again so we can see the 3rd party drivers loaded.
