before my P4 xp pc using 40gig HDD
and suddenly it crash for unknown reason
when i tried o start the pc it say something
"please save your important files blah.blah.blah"
but it cant load windows, i tried in safe mode but no luck
so i ask advice in a shop and they said you need to change it for a new one
(maybe they said that just to sell) so i bought 80gig
and then it needs me 2 weeks to find someone to recover my important file from the old one (service charge $40)
Now, i want to know if there is software/program or way that it can repair the 40gigHDD?
im not a pc expert, if there is what i must do? do i need to make it slave for to repair it?

    thanks for reading....

How is the system set up now? Is the old drive connected? The new one? Which one is master? Slave?

Is the new drive set up & working?

Look at the back of the old drive. You will see a jumper. Set the drive to 'slave''. It should be easy to see......hopefully. Put the drive back into the computer & connect the power & ide cable. Boot up.

When in windows you should be able to see the drive if it is still in working order. If you see it grab the files you want & put them onto the new drive.

Once done you can then right click on the drive & format it ready to use again.

Look at the back of the old drive. You will see a jumper.

What do you mean? do i need to connect it as "slave"?
so shutdown pc then connect the hdd to slave?

It should be easy to see.....
and when its connected., what will happen when i boot the pc?
how do i connect to slave?

When in windows you should be able to see the drive if it is still in working order
how do i know if its still working fine?

im very sorry HIPSTER, im not pc expert
    i really need your assistance
if you will post your instruction here (i really appreciate) and i will print it so i have guide to do it.

Shutdown the pc & unlpug itfrom the power point. Be very careful not to create any static with your shoes especially on a carpet. Open the case.

From there it gets a bit hard to explain. Go over here to get an idea on the jumper settings. Drives are different so you'll have to figure it out.

Set the old drive as a slave. (look closely at the back or go to the manufacturers website)

Secure the drive in the case with the 4 screws. If you look at the ide cable (the wide one) going into the new drive you should see (hopefully) another connection port half way along it. That's what plugs into the old drive. You might have to move the new drive up a slot or two to make room. Make sure you don't loosen either end of the ide cable. Check it. Plug in the power cable.

Bootup. The system will either boot into windows or if the old drive is cactus it won't boot at all. If it won't boot the drive is probably dead.

If it does boot open windows explorer. You should see it there. Right click \ properties. You should see the size of it. If you see it, it is probably working.

Copy over the files you want then format the old drive. Hope that helps.

    Edit/ This movie might help.

my old hdd is SAMSUNG and this is the guide (slave)
    http://web.mit.edu/mokang/Public/20031017171605421_InstallGuide_ENGLISH.pdf

correct me if im wrong for my conclusion:
according to the link above, it needs to cover the 4 pins (slave)
my problem is i have only 1pc plastic attached here (the small thing) to cover the 2pins
i will try to look first another one pin (200meters away from my place) to the shop

before i will do it (surely i will do your instruction) could you please answer this:
if it will not boot , nothing will happen to my hdd (master drive)? lost file?

if it will boot to windows and the old still working, how do i format it?

    thanks you very much again

Looking at the pdf file & you old drive being 40gig it seems as if you are going to have to track down another jumper. Try the local computer shop. If he's a good guy he should just give you one.

If it won't boot simply take it out & toss it. It won't do any damage to your other drive. (before booting check all the cable connections to see if they are seated correctly)

If it does boot & you see it in windows explorer right click on it & chose properties. You will see the format option in there. Don't forget to copy/move the files you want to keep first.

i tried it but this is what happen

i got the other cover for the pins
i tried what you told to me and this is my log (i will # so we trace my log very fast):
    1-
    i Boot-up
then it appears the thing what happen when my old hdd crash
    it says:
    AWARD MEDALLION BIOS
    blah
    blah
    then bleow says
WARNING: immediately Backup your data and replace you hard disk drive
    A failure maybe immenent

    F1 setup F2 continue

    2-
    so i tried F2
    it happen same as above

    so i tried F1
    so i got BIOS

    3-
then i tried to modify the "slave" its in auto so i make it in HDD or something
    then save exit
    it boot again
now it load in windows, but its not yet finished to load it start to shutdown, so i wait till shutdown
then i start again same happen above (#1)

    4-
so i tried again in F2, so it starts again to load windows but same again it restart again and shutdown again:confused: , then unplug electric

    5-
then i take out the old (slave)
then plug start again, then it restarting itself again and again
i thought some wrong, so tried to go in safemode so i can system restore but no luck it restart again and again
so i tried to locate what i change in #3 i return in auto

Maybe my setting for the pins?
because it loads windows (but it restart again because what i make in #3)
so meaning is there possible to reformat?

And surely i shutdown my pc before i leave it last night (8:30PM) but when i saw this morning its running (it restart itself in 3:00am) but my ad-watch has alarm
    AD-WATCH ALARM

Sounds like the old drive is dead. Take it out. Reset the bios to what it was or so that it is seeing the new drive. Don't know why it won't boot now.

    Try this>
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
    1. Start your computer.
    2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
    3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
    4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

See how that goes. make sure you have not knocked any cables lose

Don't know what is going on with the last part of your post.

Just re read the last post of your post again & saw that you clicked, 'Click here for advice'. O Oh.

Hopefully as you read this you are back into your new drive. Now it might be time to scan for trojans & virus'.

Did a google for NOTEPAD.EXE %1 and came up with this page.

On that page do a search for NOTEPAD.EXE %1. You'll see it about half way down.

If you don't know what it is, it is always safer for secutity to block it. Once you figure out what it is & it is safe then you allow access. But it sounds very suss....not good.

Looks like you posted just after me so probably haven't seen my last post. Check it out.

GREAT to hear you got back in. I was starting to get worried.

    im sorry Hipster Doofus
i think your correct, we post at the same time, it got few seconds ahead from mind
i check the link, im now afraid that my pc now infected because i accept it and it come so many that asking the same
    some i accept others block
its really getting complicated for me because of this old HDD
i will try to look some body for the repairing for that

i have Ad-watch for anti spyware and i will not scan with it because of this registry alteration
im scanning now with Zone-alarm Anti-spyware and AV
    and later AVG
what can you offer for the anti-spyware & av?

  16. Hipster Doofus

    Hipster Doofus MajorGeek

Check this in the registry key to see if you are infected.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\txtfile\shell\open\command

it changes the Value data of the (Default) value from

    C:\Windows\Notepad.exe %1

    to

    C:\Windows\System\Notepad.exe %1

If yours is still C:\Windows\Notepad.exe %1 then it looks OK. You are probably not infected. Do a virus scan to be on the safe side.

As for me I use AVG free edition & rarely use Ad Aware as I keep track of what I install.

While I'm far from being an expert at HJT logs, I did see at least three questionable items in yours. Not wishing to jump in front of Hipster Doofus, but try this link, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407, and consider the Malware Removal forum. Hope this helps!:)

but as of now i will all the advice i got, later i will post what happen

(im still thinking maybe i get the infection from the old HDD that i tried to repair connecting as a slave, meaning my old HDD its still working but not accessible because of that infection, thats my evaluation. i will try to look somebody to repair this and i will not try to do it my self)
