We have an old sony viao computer running Windows XP (Home ed). It runs safemode's bootstrap for a moment before It gives me a BSOD of UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, with STOP: 0x000000ED(0x873493A0, 0x000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). The disk also makes a lot of clicking noises whenever it moves, so I'm pretty sure it's failing.

Is there any tools to transfer data from the damaged, unbootable harddrive to an external harddrive?

deletesystem32 what you could do is connect this drive as a secondary drive to a desktop and see if it will be detected, from Windows or a live bootable disc. You can also try to connect the drive to a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter you can purchase from tigerdirect or newegg, to see if it be detected so you can try and grab the data off. A lot of the times when a drive is inaccessible there isn't a whole lot that you personally won't be able to do with it.
A mechanical failure means that your drive has broken parts that are preventing it from working—busted drives often make a telltale clicking sound as they futilely attempt to access their files. If you hear that, your data may still be there, but you're not getting it back without calling in the experts
