When you press F8 during boot, can you get into safe mode or last good configuration?

Is this XP? nd if so, what SP? Do you have an original XP CD?

Boot to your XP install CD, and press R to enter the recovery console when prompted. Eventually, you'll be sitting at what looks like an old-school DOS prompt. Type chkdsk /r and press Enter. It will take some time, it may appear to lock up, and you may actually see the progress percentage counter go backward... don't worry about these things, just go have a few beers and a pizza and let it run. When it finishes, type exit and press Enter, and do NOT boot to the XP disc; let the PC boot as usual, and with any luck, it will boot all the way to Windows. :-D
Let us know if this works... if not, we'll try some other things. Good luck!

(the chkdsk command has a space between the 'chkdsk' and the '/r')

You might be able to use a Linux Live CD to access the hard drive, then copy the files to a Fat 32 formatted flash or external drive. PCLinuxOS (2007, TinyME, MiniMe), Knoppix, and Puppy Linux are a few that have worked well for me, and were easy to get the hang of quickly. Hope your hard drive is accessible. Puppy Linux is minimal (around 200MB) and should work well on an older machine. You need to download the .iso image from the distributions website and burn to a CD/DVD with IMGBurn in Windows, I have been using k3b in Linux. Your computer will need to boot from CD/DVD to get the Live CD up and running. (Runs in RAM-no HDD required) Cross your fingers and hope... Back it up in the future if possible...., If the drive is bad I've heard putting the drive in a sealed plastic bag and putting it in the freeaer has worked, never did for me though, or even dropping it a short distance, which I guess may have worked on older drives, that one never worked for me either.

dlb's procedure for WinXP is identical for Win2k. It was a common problem and a known issue prior to Win2k SP4.

    chicken's right.

This BSOD is common for win2k and some models of computers, specefically IBM T42's with docking stations. It's usually due to the os being imaged instead of a manual install.

What's your spec's on your pc?

No legal way to download ANY version of windows and since this site doesn't deal with illegal means, there will be no links posted.

    Yup, or XP or vista.

Do a manual install instead though. BTW, just out of curiosity, what's your make and model on your PC? I've seen this happen with various IBM Txx's laptop, so am wondering if you have one as well.

    Heck,

On bootup, after the POST, press the F8 key untill you see a boot menu that allows you to boot in safe mode. Boot in safe mode with networking.

If you can get in, copy all the information you need to a flash drive or e-mail it to a web mail account etc.

If you're stilling getting a BSOD even with safe mode, then you'll need to go to a computer store to get them to transfer the data for you.

You could try booting with, for example, a Linux LiveCD. You'd then need a place to copy the files, of course.

now when you say a place to copy them.. like in a thumb drive or whatever they are called?

Yeah, that will work. Or if you have another PC on the same network with an FTP server on it. Or you can try to access a Windows machine with Samba shares, but there's no guarantee that a Linux LiveCD is going to have a Samba client installed.
