harddrive selection

I have a compac presario f750us laptop. The hard drive has damaged sectors that caused windows to crash. The questions is are all hard drives interchangeable, meaning the hard drive that I order online how do i know it will fit?

If you have not already done so, it would be a good idea to create a set of recovery disks. Once you install the new drive, you will not be able to restore your operating system unless you have an install disc or these restore disks.

I think that's misleading; in most cases, that's not true. When I replaced the hard drive in my Compaq Presario F572US notebook PC about 6 months ago with a Western Digital hard drive, I used the free version of Acronis software provided by Western Digital to clone my old hard drive to the new one. To do this, a USB adapter or external enclosure is needed to connect the new hard drive to the computer via USB port. I used an external enclosure. Then, the old (still installed) hard drive was cloned, or fully copied, to the new hard drive in the external enclosure. And then, I removed the old hard drive from the computer, removed the new hard drive from the external enclosure, installed it in the computer, and that was it.

Seagate also has software to accomplish the same procedure.

My external enclosure now has my old hard drive in it and serves as an external hard drive.

You are correct. It would be possible to clone the old drive to a new one. The reason I was hesitant to suggest that route was because the OP stated his hard drive had bad sectors and getting blue screens. I was not sure if this would cause a problem for him later on but he should try to clone the old to the new first. Thanks for the suggestion.
