I have an old Dell Dimension XPS T600 running Windows XP Home Edition. In the last few months, I have had problems with accessing links, slow response time and lockups. I have Norton 2006 AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security 2005 running. I would like to find a program to run just to make sure that all the basic hardware components are physically functioning. Then move on from there to find other software problems.

Now that I have the Everest Report what do I do with it. Its got more information on things I know nothing about than I know what to do with. I do know that the BIOS is dated 09/21/99 and that it probably should be updated. But other than that H. E. L. P.

I really dont know of a program thats going to flat out tell you this or that is ok, with the exception of smart, hard drive program. Everest just tells you what you have, just updating things like the bios, video, chipset drivers, will most likely help things more than they hurt. Here is a small program that will clean the junk off of your hard drive, have used this on many pc's with no ill effects.

Not sure if your aware but the "Device Manager" will automatically show you if their is a "Hardware Issue" (Mostly!).

Device Manager = right click MY Computer > Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager.

Now if there are any yellow excalmations or red crosses then you have a "Hardware Issue". Is this what you are seeking? Otherwise EVEREST can certainly be used to monitor any onboard Sensors if you have them (your PC should!!!) and these can act as indicators for some of your primary hardware. Meaning you can make educated guesses as to what your system is doing. Temp/RPM/Volts can all be good indicators.

As Bold eagle said ...device manager will tell you if you have any hardware problems/conflicts .....everest will show temps/voltages/etc. of the physical components ....as to the specific problems you are having ..we need more info:
    how much ram?
error codes from event viewer ( control panel - admin. tools - event viewer -both system and applications) post the latest errors (X) and the codes.

NOrton sucks ....suggest an online scan: http://www.activescan.com

Have to agree Norton apps are very resource hungary and have a "large footprint". There are far superior apps out there that wont drain your memory.

Right click local connection and choose repair. See if that works or you get an error message.

Did you go to properties and try the repair?

If so, you may need to swap out your ethernet card to see if the card is bad.

I did get a connection with francis25? she must be close by. Now I tried the change connection and got reconnected to my network it says wireless internet connection (Joe) speed 54.0 Mbps. I still have the icon at the bottom of the screen that reads Local Area Connection network cable unplugged. Is it fixed?

When I go to properties, there is no "repair" so I went to the network troubleshooter

Gezzz...(LOL)....yes, you are connected ..with your wireless network card ...the local connection is telling you that you do not have a hardwired connection ...if you want to remove the icon, right click on the local connection and uncheck the boxes "show icon.... and "notify me when ....
on the wireless connection, check the boxes.

You are connection with your wireless card ....it is fine!
The x in the tray is telling you that you have no connection with your WIRED connection (as in a wire that goes to a router and then to a modam and then to the phone/cable).

Right click on My network places / properties / you will see two connections:
One is wireless and will show a status of connected.
The second will be the local connection with an X ..saying it is not connected. Right click on that and choose properties ...at the bottom of the properties page will be two boxes :
uncheck both ( show when I am connected and notify me when i am not connected or limited connection).
