Right, for the same money (if you include the cost of the mobo) the choice is between

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2140, S775, 1.6 GHz, 800MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2x 512KB Cache, Retail in a Asus P5B-VM iG965, S775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA II, uATX, On Board VGA

    AMD AM2 Athlon 64 4800+ Windsor Core, Dual Core 2.5GHz, 2x 512KB Cache, Energy Efficient Retail in a Asus M2A-VM HDMI, AMD 690G, S AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA II, uATX

The Intel chip will overclock to about 3GHz, not sure about the AMD.
I'd like to stick with AMD but I have two CoreDuo's folding at the moment (1.66MHz) and they really churn the WU's out.

I'm open to advice - which to go for??

I'd go for the intel personally just for the fact of the conroe core

I had a flick through that test and it only has Xeons, no Core2Duos :( it must have been some time ago too as they have the 4800x2 at $1000!!!

I have an overclocked S754 3700 and my 1.66 CoreDuos easily out Fold it

may of 05 slightly out of date :p but either way amd or intel they both do well :)

I'm pretty sure they'll be similar (after overclocking the intel) but all I use most of my computers for is Folding so I'd like the one that's going to job the best.
It's also in the back of my mind that the AM2 cpu is going to be dropped pretty soon by AMD so the upgrade path is going to be limited to getting a 6000 when the price drops, whereas the 775 socket has a large range of chips currently available and the quad core chip will go on the same mobo as the 2140 that I've been looking at.

hmmm... so the 6000 i jst installed in my new desktop isn't going to work very well? :D

This thing should fold pretty fast...

I can't wait to get it going... but I need to get some clear silicone- i need to mount the plexi glass in the windows I made.

(I figured if im going to spend this much in components, it better look cool 2)

So as of now, assembly is halted due to uncompleted vanity Mods.

Other then the windows/lights etc, I Jst have to wire the fan controllers/ thermostats, install the case fans, install all the drivers, then throw in a linux distro.

lol! I didn't say the 6000 wouldn't fold fast!! It's just the upgrade path that concerns me with getting an AM2 system, as well as if it would fold as fast as a quad core intel that would replace the 2140.

I bought an E2140 and an Asrock 1333 board in the end.
Overclocked from 1.6GHz to 2.7GHz with no hassle at all. (after the MicroMart guys pointed the way!)
    Folds GOOD!!
