    New Proc, ram, mobo
i have an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.66
    16G of ddr3 pc10700
    on a gigabyte 45t-es3g
the proc is idle with four chrome tabs open
the cpu temp is 69~71 if play a HD video my computer shuts down, if i play a game even something like starcraft, it shuts down.
obviosly i have a heat issue so my question is:

since my case is missing a side (i put a 19" box fan blowing into the box)
should i get another case or is there some way to further mod my old case
or what do the experts recommend?

    I found this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181015

will that solve my shutting down issue?

Have you checked your heatsink to make sure it is in full contact with the CPU and checked to see if you have heatsink compound on the CPU. You can't trust the pad that sometimes comes with heatsink/fan.

not enough thermopaste will make the proc run 25 degrees hotter and still function?
there looked to be plenty of it on the chip and the fan/heat-sink are new

would that water-cool system be better than my boxfan and new fan heatsink/.

Are you overclocking by any chance? If so you might want to throttle it back to see if your temps lower.

I couldn't tell you if the water-cooled system would be any better. I run a solid copper HS/Fan assembly on my modest 2200+ AMD Athlon. My temps don't usually run over 45C.

no OC for me, the hardware is 2 expensive
I think my new hardware is to much for the air circulation i provide
hence my idea of water cooled
i just thought it would be more effective than the air

plus if i change my video card i wont have to push it as hard producing less heat.. at least that's my theory, feel free to nix that idea with your knowledge and exp.

As long as you have sufficient fans in the case to keep the air circulating you should be fine. Your temps are hot but I would not expect them to cut out. It should go to about 100C before you get shut downs.

    It may be PSU related.

As far as fans go, as a minimum you will want one 80/120mm fan on the rear at the top that sucks air out, and one on the front at the bottom that sucks air in.

The theory is that cool air is sucked in through the front at the bottom. It heats up and rises through the case before being expelled through the rear.

problem solved new case with 6 120mm fans and a gtx 465.playing games on max raises my temp to mid 60s c.

70C is too hot at idle no matter the other issues, should be <40C. I found that my Q6600 heatsink fan slowly failed and I had to get an after market cooler, same symptoms as you. I think you'll be back here sooner or later.:(

its only ran about 12-16 hrs actual run time at those temps before i got the the new parts so far it hasn't reached the 70's c even with crysis 2 on high settings,so while your point is valid i think i have escaped damage
