Hardware problems?

For about two months now, my computer has been making loud, consistent choking sounds. It is no longer that quiet machine as I bought it. In addition to the loud noises it makes, it is slower. I checked inside the computer, and everything looked fine, and I also dusted inside. It still makes the noise. It is not really the noise that bothers me, but the low dip in the performance. Is it that my hardware is wearing down?

It depends on how old your computer is. You could try checking for malware, updating stuff, defrag.... and see if that makes a difference in preformance.

First thing to check is your hard drive, so download a manufacturer's utility for your particular drive. Most are available from the downloads section here.

Also, make sure you have S.M.A.R.T enabled in your Bios, then carry out a thorough CHKDSK or scandisk and defrag.

Just to be on the safe side, back up all your work that you can't afford to lose.

First off when dealing with hardware problems, it is nessessary to state what hardware we are dealing with.
    Computer model
    What type cpu, speed.
    What make of motherboard.
    Who much ram.
    What type harddrives, size.
    What type of cdrom.

And any other information that is dealing with the hardware. So if you post this type of information then maybe a solution could be found.

If you do not know who to get this information.
    For window operating systems.
    Start
    Programs
    Accessories
    System tools
    System information

Copy and past if need any information provided there to here.
Then maybe a solution can be found.

Choking sounds from a machine? Sounds fascinating. Can you be a bit more specific? Are we talking about a buzz or a rattle or a loud hum?

Or is some program launching a .WAV file that provides the literal sound of someone choking? (That sound would certainly be consistent, and would likely slow the computer down while the .WAV file was playing!) :)

Is the sound continuous or intermittent? If the latter, how long and how frequently do you hear this noise? And does there appear to be any relationship between the appearance of the sound and anything you're doing or that's going on in the computer's environment?

While you're coming back with that information, I'll offer an observation that may or may not be relevant.

Fans sometimes rattle or buzz -- especially those with sleeve bearings that have dried up. A fan that's making that much noise should be replaced ASAP, before it seizes up and stops cooling whatever it's supposed to be cooling.

You can figure out which fan is making the noise by gently touching the eraser end of a pencil to the rotating hub of the fan to make it slow down a little. If the pitch or other characteristics of the sound change, you've identified the offending fan.

You mention that your system slows down when the noise appears. If there is a bit of a lag between the appearance of the noise and the slowdown, your CPU fan is a suspect. If the fan bearing is crapping out, the fan will slow down when it makes the noise, and your CPU won't get the cooling it needs. It heats up, and triggers protection circuitry that slows it down so it doesn't generate as much heat.

But I'm guessing about that part, because we have no idea what CPU you have and whether it will behave that way.

    Hi, newguy3 --

You've posted your query to a very old thread, and your query doesn't seem to be related to this thread.

I'd suggest that you do a couple of searches to see if you can find a thread or two that is related to your problem; if you don't find a suitable one, start one of your own.

And to deal with your problem, we'll need a bit more information about what you're trying to do. Brevity is usually a good thing, but insufficient information will often get you bad guesses for answers.
