I'm fascinated by the art of hacking. Now I'm not looking to do anything harmful or illegal (as I have no desire to go to jail), but I would like to be knowledgable on the subject of hacking. Would anyone mind pointing me to a good Web site on the matter, or maybe a good book? Perhaps some utilities? Again, I'm just looking to be a knowledgable HARMLESS hacker. Please don't be offended by my question. Thank you.

In my opinion, there really aren't any "tricks" or "secrets" to becoming a good hacker. If you are already an excellent Network Admin, then you basically have the core knowledge required for hacking.

I think hacking has more to do with your values and what you feel is right or wrong. There is a line, and when you cross it, you are hacking.

When I'm setting something up, like a VPN or something like that, if I'm having trouble getting it to work, I'll try every possible way to get through. Basically, thats what a hacker does. So, if you already know how to do these things, it's basically all in how you choose to use your knowledge.

The best resource for learning how to hack is to go to school for networking, read a lot on the subject and then just practice.

I myself am quite interested in hacking as well. I respect others privacy and property, so I wouldn't do any harmful hacking. I do find it quite fasinating, though. I think it comes more from the challenge of doing something you aren't supposed to be able to do. Just to say you could do it.

Bottom line...there aren't any "hacking schools". Just study and work with networks as much as possible. Just know where to draw the line and try to respect others. That and oh, yeah...hacking is illegal. ;)

A lot of useful information on here. I strongly advise against hacking, its illegal & it serves no purpose to nuke some poor souls computer. However should you get into the banks computer & have access to transferring funds around - remember who gave you the link ;)

Thanks guys. But I'll repeat, I'm not going to break into any computers or anything else like that. I'm just fascinated by the topic. Besides, to be a good network admin you should probably know at least a little about it, this way you know what to look for if you suspect someone is hacking your network.

If your testing your own system your not really hacking your doing a penetration test. there is no harmless hacking though you go into a computer that is not yours or someones pc that you was invited into then its trespassing be just like you leave your truck door unlock come out of the grocery store and someone is sitting in it listening to your cd's and playing with the eletric seats. he was just harmless , but it winds up alot of trouble.

just an opion from a C|EH
