If there's 5 cars in the household, you'd need 5 titles to be legit, right?

Microsoft has all the right in the world to do whatever it takes to end the piracy they have to deal with. You have any idea the billions they lose each year to crooks?

One laughable thing about this: I'm sure tech forums will be flooded with threads about how they can't get Windows Updates anymore, and watch them try to wiggle out from under the "illegal copy of Windows" baloney when they post ;)

I would appriciate you not assuming i have a non legal copy of windows as you have probably made that assuption in your mind.

If microsoft is to make there product more accessable they will have to reduce the price and other things to make it more presentable or piracy will continue

Show me in this thread where I've made the assumption you have an illegal copy of Windows.

Love the analogy Angie!:) Be it software, cars or anything else, if it's for sale then that means you should purchase it or go without. If that wasn't the case we wouldn't have so many people in jail, paying hefty fines or doing community service work. Stealing is stealing, it's illegal no matter how you look at it or what the product is.

Here I disagree to a point..it's not laughable...we already see so much of this it's pathetic. As technology advances my hope is that more people running illegal software get busted..they rip off not only the vendors but you and I too by driving up the prices for everyday people who live paycheck to paycheck trying to make ends meet. At least at the end of the day we can take pride in what we do have because we know we worked hard for it and didn't break the law to get it. Makes you appreciate things a little more eh?:)

As for the original question posed...I imagine at some point someone will find a way to get around at least some of this however it is my hope that it will be short lived and they get caught and sent to jail to share a cell with Bubba.

Microsoft hasn't placed any restrictions on security updates to the Windows OS (yet). They do require validation for access to their free software like the MS Antispyware, WMP 10 and such now.

So you think because of piracy M$ is losing money? How much does Uncle Bill GIVE to India, ECT?? I am not condoning theft, but the "impact" is greatly exaggerated.

I am with the few who say sell it for less and make more in the end....Bill never took econ –LOL.
Instead they charge enough so the “few” who buy it pay for those who do not.

The Genuine MS program is going to need validation for you to download extras – power toys, media players, ect … not security updates….yet.

So you’d think I am a pirate? I seem to take their side.. but actually I have all legal versions of M$ software via my companies partnership..so there!

So long as there is a charge for Windows, be it 50 dollars, or 200 dollars, people will pirate. Wanna know why OSX isn't pirated?

Because most people have PCs. It won't run on it, in its current form. There is a x86 version purportedly floating around, but thats rumor, of course, and guess what? By floating around, I mean--its being pirated!!

People bitch and moan on how much Windows costs. Go out, and build an OS of that complexity and tell me how much it costs. Its not like OSX, where they built upon a pre-existing OS, that Apple did not write.

Every single computer must have a valid license for the OS installed on the computer; whether that be Windows, Linux, BSD, Unix, Solaris, OSX. One computer, one license; unless you are using volume licensing, then it's one licence for x number of computers.

Microsoft has been saying for awhile now that anyone downloading from their site will be required to validate that they are using a validly licensed copy of Windows. This does not apply to critical updates. Due to the popularity of Windows, legal copies or otherwise, and the proliferation of viruses and spyware; Microsoft will supply critical system updates to all copies of Windows that are in use; validly licensed or not.

Now with all that said if you are using a 'Pirated' copy of Windows, buy a license.

i am not going to go to war over this .. but if MS didnt make money, could Bill give it away????
    http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=MSFT&t=my&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=

Sure people will still pirate.. thats what they do.. but some would pay 50 dollars for XP than steal it or stay with 98 (which they could of used on multiple PCs without all the hoopla(activation, ect)).

Like in econ class you can sell 1 widget for 100,000 dollars to one person, or possibly 100,000,000 widgets at a dollar... who makes more?

Yes. Thats money Microsoft would have received, had it not been pirated. You don't have to show a negative loss for the year to lose money. Even if they did give Windows away for free (which no large company does, save open source, enthusiast projects), where would they make money off of it?

If you say tech support, I'm going to laugh. Companies don't make money off of tech support unless they are charging ridiculous amounts of money per incident, give no warranty, and their employees are making pennies. Thats changing with the outsourcing of course, with companies trying to make things like tech support something they can make money off of.

Point in case. MS charges 35 dollars per incident for a non warranty Windows XP issue. In that one call, my previous employer would have paid me more than that in my wages alone. Thats not even taking into consideration other employees running the networks, maintaining the equipment, phones, etc, etc.

Edit: Bill gives away money because he has so much, he doesn't know what to do with it.

Whether the OS cost you $50 or $200, people will pirate it, doesn't matter you made it affordable. Linspire $59.95 retail is heavily pirated; and the folks over at Linspire didn't have to spend millions in R&D to develop the underlying OS.

    Unfortunately, thats a weak argument.

When the amount of people who pirate a 20 dollar program becomes so bad that the author has to stop supporting or updating the program, you know that piracy has nothing to do with the amount of money the program costs. There are several, nice, cheap shareware programs out there that have since faded into the sunset because of the author not being able to make any money off of it due to piracy.

Economics and piracy only belong in the same sentence if you are referring to how much money companies are losing due to it.

    Thats still piracy.

Do you think because 98 allows multiple installations that it is still legal?

Of course not. Read the EULA.

You dont have to be a hacker to get around WGA... I ROLMAO when I was told the workaround... 5 mouse clicks and apparently you get access.

WGA... is needed for WU and MS Downloads, at WU its the first thing that it askes you to do is update the WGA Activex and then validate it... if it fails you dont get updates.... I have hard that if you haev AutoUpdates enabled you still get criticals ( but dont quote me on that as I cant test that theory out )

PS.. DONT PM ME AS I WILL NOT TELL YOU THE WORKAROUND!

You took a stance, and everyone showed where you were incorrect, in a very mature way. Flaming someone requires personal attacks.

Not one person has done that here.

So no, there is no 'Flame On.'

What worries me is that I have the windows XP that I got with a Dell. I built a new PC and sold the Dell with Windows uninstalled, so I am free and clear right? Well, when I did the last upgrade it said this could cause problems in the future. Why?

And when I move my windows to a new pc again, will it actually work or is it stuck on that PC now?

  25. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

foogoo, you have no idea how much money is lost to piracy. I really doubt the numbers are skewed that much.

As for there being no right and wrong, well, you are incorrect again ;)

If you bought Windows Xp with the Dell (as in, preinstalled), it is OEM. The license is for that machine, and that machine alone. Doesn't matter if you uninstalled it from the Dell, its still breaking the EULA, and considered piracy.
