Has my graphics card broken?

Hi,

I was playing a game, the screen froze and then was covered in pink horizontal lines. The computer then turned itself off.

When I turned it back on, the screen looks distorted and has green and other coloured squares randomly all over it. I get the message about windows shutting down prematurely and wanting to start in Safe Mode etc.

If I start in normal mode, Windows Vista doesn't load at all. I get a blue screen with text on it and then restarts back to the Safe Mode etc screen.

If I start in Safe Mode, Vista loads but the screen still looks broken.

Has my graphics card broken?

Can you try the card in another computer? Same for the monitor. It does sound like it's fried. Re-check all connections and reseat the card.

 

I can't try on another computer. I'm posting this from work.

I have a good graphics card, it's an ATI Raedon, so I'm assuming it is PCI.

 

It's not when a graphics card or hard drive for that matter dies, but when. Can you RMA it if it is dead?

 

It would be wonderful if you could provide some actual info on the PC in question.

Make, model, etc.

Otherwise we can make baseless speculation at best.

Everest, Belarc Advisor, even a "dxdiag" would help, google is your friend and they are all readily available here.

Baseline data of your PC will provide valid feedback, otherwise fishing in a pond.

 

PC's back up and working after leaving it overnight. However, whenever I try and run a game, after a few minutes I get the problem mentioned in my initial post.

after a few minutes I get the problem mentioned in my initial post.

sounds like overheating that, if you're lucky, might not have damaged anything yet. the fan may have failed and/or the heatsink might be full of dust, so blow it out and check if the fan is spinning. if it isn't damaged yet, it probably will be soon if you keep overheating it to failure.

 

MangoMan hit the nail on the head there. It does sound like overheating. When you pull the card check if there's a lot of dust on it get yourself some compressed air and clean it out. You may also want to clean out the inside of the case as well and all/any fans inside. Do not use a standard vacuum cleaner to clean out the inside of your computer. If you have a spare card or can borrow one from someone you may want to swap them over see if you have any issues. Do check when you put your original card in again to ensure the fan is spinning.

If worst comes to worst a replacement card wouldn't be very expensive and you'd probably get a performance boost too.

The fan looks to be spinning fine. I don't have any compressed air, but I've blown the inside and there isn't that much dust.

The AMD Catalyst Control Centre says the temperature is between 56 and 61 degrees celsius.

 

I assume that's the idle temperature? It seems high, is the heatsink firmly attached to the GPU? How is the airflow around the case are all fans operating normally? What about temperature outside the case. It's summer and I know not everyone is all parts of North America run A/C. Just a theory but I'm thinking when you've been running your machine for a while or when you run games thermal protection is being activated by your GPU to prevent it overheating.

Check the above and if you can get some thermal compound you want want to remove the heatsink, clean it then apply new compound and reseat the heatsink.
